Governor Ron Desantis has tapped former state Senator Jay Collins to fill the slot vacated by former Lt. Governor Jeanette Nunez who was selected to be the President of Florida International University. Desantis called the Collins “the Chuck Norris of Florida Politics.”
Desantis made his announcement in Tampa on Tuesday.

Jay Collins is a decorated former Special Forces Medic. According to Desantis, Collins was deployed to Afghanistan, Iraq, and South America. He spent 23 years in the military where Collins was awarded a Purple Heart after he lost a leg in combat.
While Collins has a limited record on life issues, he is solidly pro-life and voted in favor of our Heartbeat bill. We, at Florida Right to Life, knew if he passed the “Desantis test,” he was going to be solidly in the pro-life camp!
Desantis did well to choose this man of character, and resilience. Collins had a tough life, as he was raised by his grandparents and found himself homeless as a high school student. He turned his tough circumstances into a positive and is the definition of a true American, and, I would add, a Florida story.
Collins was sworn in to the prestigious office in the presence of his wife Layla and two sons, Gabe and Colt. As Desantis sang his praises, Collins and his family beamed with the honor of being selected to complete the term vacated by Nunez.
Well done Gov. Desantis. We at Florida Right to Life look forward to working with our new Lt. Governor, Jay Collins.
