Attorney General Pam Bondi revealed that the suspect in the viral assault in which a Subway sandwich was thrown at a federal officer in D.C. is a Department of Justice (DOJ) employee, though she confirmed he has since been terminated.
“If you touch any law enforcement officer, we will come after you,” Bondi wrote on X Thursday morning. “Not only is he FIRED, he has been charged with a felony.”
She described the incident as evidence of ongoing internal challenges at the DOJ, referring to it as the “Deep State.”
“You will NOT work in this administration while disrespecting our government and law enforcement,” she wrote.
Bondi’s remarks were in reference to Sean Charles Dunn, who has been charged with felony assault after allegedly striking a U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent with a Subway sandwich during a confrontation on city streets earlier this week.
According to police affidavits and statements from authorities, the 37-year-old reportedly threw the sandwich while shouting at federal officers, escalating the incident before fleeing the scene.
The incident occurred Sunday night, when Dunn allegedly confronted CBP agents and Metro Transit Police members, shouting, “f*** you! You f***ing fascists! Why are you here? I don’t want you in my city!”
Police say he continued yelling obscenities before throwing the sandwich at an officer and fleeing the scene.
He was subsequently apprehended and transported to the MPD Third District for processing.
Dunn reportedly admitted to authorities, stating, “I did it. I threw a sandwich,” according to the criminal complaint.
D.C. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro announced the felony assault charge Wednesday, emphasizing that attacks on law enforcement officers will not be tolerated.
“He thought it was funny. Well he doesn’t think it’s funny today because we charged him with a felony: Assault on a police officer,” Pirro said in a video posted to X.
“And we’re going to back the police to the hilt. So there! Stick your Subway sandwich somewhere else!”
Authorities described the incident as part of a broader concern over attacks on law enforcement, highlighting the need for federal support in high-crime areas.
The case comes as federal authorities have increased their presence in the District, assisting local police in efforts to reduce violent crime.
Earlier this week, Resist the Mainstream reported that President Donald Trump deployed hundreds of federal personnel to support the Metropolitan Police Department and activated the National Guard.
Officials have said the supplemental law enforcement presence aims to restore public safety and reinforce authority.
“I’m deploying the National Guard to help reestablish law, order and public safety in Washington, DC,” Trump said, according to FOX 5. “And they’re going to be allowed to do their job properly.”
The president also invoked Section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act to formally declare a public safety emergency.
Since the deployment, more than 100 arrests have been reported, including individuals accused of gun crimes, alleged illegal immigration violations, outstanding warrants and drug offenses, the New York Post reports.
Crime statistics show a 26 percent year-over-year decrease in violent crime in 2025, covering homicides, sexual abuse cases, assaults with dangerous weapons, and robberies.
Despite these efforts, some city leaders and residents have expressed opposition.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser criticized the federal presence, stating, “We don’t—and I think I speak for all Americans—we don’t believe it’s legal to use the American military against American citizens on American soil,” noting local officials and MPD leadership were not informed beforehand.
Protests organized by advocacy group Free D.C. also took place Tuesday, denouncing the federal intervention as excessive.
Some residents described the deployment as unnecessary and a misallocation of resources, raising questions about federal overreach.
The Dunn case remains ongoing, and court records do not currently list an attorney representing him.
Authorities continue to stress that assaults on federal officers will result in strict prosecution, highlighting the seriousness of such confrontations and the potential consequences for similar actions in the future.
