Vice President J.D. Vance has revealed that his predecessor Kamala Harris declined to provide his family with a customary tour of the vice presidential residence before the presidential transition.
The Vance family now brings the sound of young children back to the halls of power for the first time in decades.
Veep J.D. Vance and second lady Usha Vance have made the Naval Observatory residence their family home.
Vance disclosed that Harris rejected the traditional pre-inauguration tour that typically occurs between outgoing and incoming vice presidential families.
The snub particularly affected his youngest child, who never received what Vance called a “proper welcome.”
“They had never seen this house and Usha really wanted to show them,” Vance explained regarding his children’s desire to visit their future home.
Despite recognizing the political tensions that would make the situation uncomfortable, Vance instructed his staff to contact the Harris team.
The request specifically asked for Usha and their young children to receive a tour of the property.
“They were rebuffed,” Vance stated, describing Harris’s response as “mean-spirited.”
The vice presidential residence spans 9,000 square feet in Queen Anne architectural style.
The property features 33 rooms, wraparound porches, grand staircases and distinctive artistic turrets.
Located approximately two miles from the White House, the residence serves as the official home for America’s second family.
Historical precedent shows that such tours represent standard protocol between administrations.
Former Vice President Dick Cheney welcomed Joe Biden and Jill Biden to the residence in 2009.
The Bidens extended the same courtesy to Mike Pence and his family in 2016.
Mike Pence did not host Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff for a similar visit due to circumstances surrounding the 2020 election and COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.
Trending Politics (TP) outlined that a source close to Harris previously told CBS News that the former vice president faced competing priorities.
These included managing the Los Angeles wildfire crisis and dealing with a canceled overseas diplomatic trip.
TP noted that social media reactions to Vance’s revelation generated significant criticism of Harris’s decision.
“Wow, Kamala’s already dodging basic courtesy?” one user posted online. “Refusing to let the kids see their future home is just petty.”
Another commenter expressed relief about the election outcome: “Very telling. Thank goodness we literally dodged that bullet.”
Additional criticism focused on protecting the Vance children from what one user characterized as Harris’s influence.
“It’s probably just as well that his sweet young children weren’t exposed to that woman & her dysfunctional family members,” the anti-Harris commenter stated.
Despite the tour refusal, Vance acknowledged that Harris left him a courteous note on his new desk. He described the message as “boilerplate” and “not particularly profound” but still “polite.”
The Vance family includes three young children: Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel.
They represent the first children to live in the vice presidential residence since Al Gore’s family occupied the home in 1993.
The residence has been adapted to accommodate the young family’s needs. Miniature desks have been installed to provide spaces for the children to complete their homework assignments.
Vance has also added personal touches to the historic property, including installing a golf simulator to practice his swing during downtime.
“It actually feels like a real home now,” Vance commented about the transformation, according to Daily Mail reporting.
The vice president acknowledged the unique circumstances of their new lifestyle while emphasizing the benefits. “It’s kind of a crazy new world we live in, but there are definitely perks to it.”
