FORT PIERCE, FL – A tragic series of events unfolded on the Treasure Coast, beginning with a fatal shooting in West Palm Beach and ending with a deputy-involved shooting in Fort Pierce. Late Monday night, Liliana Ramirez, 58, was shot and killed in her apartment near Military Trail and Sunny Lane Avenue. Her alleged killer fled the scene in a black SUV.
Approximately an hour later, authorities spotted the suspect’s vehicle heading north on I-95. Florida Highway Patrol, along with the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, intercepted the SUV at mile marker 130. The suspect emerged from the vehicle, holding a gun to his head, which led to the temporary closure of I-95 in both directions.
As SWAT team members attempted negotiations, the suspect charged towards them. In response, law enforcement discharged their weapons, resulting in the suspect’s death at around 1:20 a.m. Tuesday morning. The incident has left a West Palm Beach community grieving the loss of Ramirez, described by friends and neighbors as a loving mother and kind-hearted individual.
In Glenwood Village, the neighborhood where Ramirez lived, residents are reeling from the shock. Friends and relatives gathered to remember her, emphasizing her warmth and the senselessness of her death. “She was loved by everyone,” one neighbor lamented. “She didn’t deserve this.”
Ramirez’s adult daughter witnessed the tragic event. A friend of both Ramirez and the suspect, Leonardo, recounted the harrowing moments when Ramirez was shot while her daughter was nearby. Leonardo revealed that the suspect, who once lived with Ramirez, entered the apartment through a broken sliding glass door before opening fire.
Security footage captured the suspect leaving the scene and beginning a chase that spanned three counties. The pursuit ended in Fort Pierce after a tense standoff, during which investigators say the suspect pointed a gun at officers, prompting them to shoot.
Leonardo added that the suspect had been living with Ramirez until she asked him to leave about a year ago due to a disagreement over mortgage payments. “It was shocking,” he said, reflecting on the suspect’s actions.
Authorities have yet to release the suspect’s name, and the investigation, involving multiple agencies, is ongoing.
