Attorney General Pam Bondi abruptly withdrew from a high-profile anti-trafficking summit in Washington, D.C., citing a medical issue, as renewed attention swirls around the Jeffrey Epstein case and her reported communications with President Donald Trump.
Pam Bondi’s medical issue

Bondi had been scheduled to speak at the Conservative Political Action Conference’s (CPAC) Summit Against Human Trafficking in Washington, D.C., and her absence drew attention as it came amid renewed scrutiny over the Epstein case. Just before the event began, Acting Assistant Attorney General Matthew Galeotti announced Bondi’s withdrawal. “I do have a note from Attorney General Pam Bondi that I wanted to share,” he told attendees before reading her statement. “I’m sorry to miss all of my CPAC friends today. Unfortunately, I am recovering from a recently torn cornea, which is preventing me from being with you. I truly wish I was able to join you and support all of the work being done on this critical issue,” Bondi said. The Justice Department did not provide additional details about her condition.
Epstein files

The announcement came less than two hours before The Wall Street Journal published a report alleging Bondi had informed Trump in May that his name appears multiple times in the Epstein files. Trump had previously stated that Bondi had not told him whether he was named in the documents. The White House denied the report. “The fact is that the president kicked [Epstein] out of his [Mar-a-Lago] club for being a creep,” White House Communications Director Steven Cheung said in a statement. “This is nothing more than a continuation of the fake news stories concocted by the Democrats and the liberal media, just like the Obama Russiagate scandal, which President Trump was right about,” Cheung added.
Bondi’s Justice Department

A Justice Department memo issued earlier this month confirmed Epstein was not murdered in 2019 and that the government does not possess an “incriminating” list of his clients. The memo contradicted Bondi’s statement earlier this year claiming an Epstein “client list” was on her desk. She later clarified she had been referring to the broader Epstein case file, not a specific client list.
Epstein ‘hoax’

Reports indicate Trump criticized some of his supporters in the wake of the fallout from the files, allegedly calling them “weaklings” for being “duped” by what he described as a “hoax” pushed by Democrats. He later softened those remarks and directed Bondi to initiate efforts to unseal grand jury materials related to Epstein. However, U.S. District Judge Robin Rosenberg rejected the Justice Department’s bid to unseal the materials. Another judge requested the department create a new case “in the public interest” to facilitate access to Epstein-related records.
