President Donald Trump has issued a sweeping executive order aimed at dismantling wasteful federal grants and shutting down taxpayer funding for far-left agendas, foreign pet projects, and programs that undermine American values. The move is being hailed by fiscal conservatives and free speech advocates as one of the boldest steps yet to restore accountability in Washington.
In the order, Trump blasts decades of reckless grantmaking, citing examples such as federally funded drag shows in Ecuador, PhD programs pushing critical race theory, and taxpayer-backed transgender sexual education programs. He also calls out the National Science Foundation (NSF) for allocating over a quarter of its new grants to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives—often thinly veiled Marxist propaganda.
The order makes clear that the problem goes far beyond ideology. It points to dangerous government-funded science, including NIH-backed gain-of-function research at the Wuhan lab—likely the origin of the COVID-19 pandemic—and NSF-funded AI censorship tools designed to suppress free speech online. Trump also names taxpayer-funded NGOs aiding illegal immigration and working against U.S. interests abroad.
Under the new rules, agencies must now subject all discretionary grants to stricter oversight, senior-level review, and clear benchmarks for success. Any project that promotes racial preferences, denies biological sex, facilitates illegal immigration, or advances anti-American values will be barred from funding. Agencies are also required to prioritize institutions committed to “Gold Standard Science” over those resting on reputation alone, and to spread grant money across a broader range of recipients rather than favoring repeat insiders.
Critically, all future federal grants will now include termination clauses allowing agencies to end funding if a project no longer serves national interests. This closes a long-abused loophole that has allowed ineffective, wasteful, or ideologically driven programs to continue for years without results.
For decades, critics have argued that Washington has turned taxpayer-funded grants into slush funds for political allies, globalist agendas, and academic elites detached from real-world needs. Trump’s order represents a direct challenge to that system—one designed to restore the original purpose of federal grants: to serve the American people and protect American interests.
With this action, the administration is making a clear statement: not one cent of taxpayer money should be used to bankroll censorship, indoctrination, or foreign projects that weaken the United States.
