When America gets tough, the global Left runs crying to Communist China. That’s exactly what we’re seeing now with Brazil’s radical socialist President Lula da Silva cozying up to Xi Jinping in an open attempt to undermine the United States and dodge accountability for his anti-democratic abuses. This isn’t just about tariffs—it’s a full-blown ideological alliance between two regimes that loathe Western liberty, free markets, and national sovereignty.
On Wednesday, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi pledged Beijing’s full support to Lula’s Brazil in resisting President Trump’s newly imposed tariffs. These tariffs—50 percent on Brazilian goods—were not slapped on at random. They are a direct response to Lula’s authoritarian crackdown on conservatives, most notably the political witch hunt against former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and the grotesque censorship campaign led by Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes. Trump made it clear: if you trample freedom, you lose access to American markets.
But instead of addressing those concerns like a rational leader, Lula is doubling down. He’s now actively aligning Brazil with China under the banner of “multipolarity”—a globalist buzzword for stripping the United States of its leadership role in the world. According to Wang, Lula and Xi are “making efforts to strengthen the Community of Shared Future for a More Just World and a More Sustainable Planet.” Translation: they want a future where America is sidelined and authoritarian regimes set the rules.
Let’s not pretend this is about economics. Lula’s government is establishing a tax advisory office in Beijing, claiming it’s about “bilateral trade complexity.” But this is political through and through. Brazil currently has just four such offices overseas—in neighboring Latin American countries and the United States, its largest trade partner. So why now, and why China? Because Lula is sending a signal: the enemy of my enemy is my friend. He’s betting that aligning with the Chinese Communist Party will give him cover from Western consequence.
And China, of course, is happy to oblige. They see a golden opportunity. Wang declared that “using tariffs as a weapon to suppress other countries violates the U.N. Charter.” That’s rich coming from a regime that weaponizes trade, manipulates currency, and openly violates human rights. China doesn’t care about global justice—they care about weakening the United States and expanding their authoritarian influence. Brazil is just the latest pawn in that strategy.
President Trump was absolutely right to act. He identified Brazil’s current regime as a national security threat—and he’s not wrong. When a country censors political opposition, jails its critics, and partners with Communist China to evade U.S. pressure, it becomes a threat not just to regional stability but to the global order America leads. Trump’s tariffs send a clear message: if you want to play footsie with dictators, don’t expect access to American wealth.
Let’s be clear: this isn’t about punishing the Brazilian people. It’s about holding corrupt socialist leadership accountable. Lula’s government is not a friend to freedom, nor is it a neutral actor on the world stage. He’s a radical leftist ideologue who’s weaponizing Brazilian institutions against anyone who dares challenge him. And now he’s partnering with a genocidal regime in Beijing to shield himself from the consequences.
This is why Trump’s America First policy matters more than ever. The Biden years emboldened our enemies by groveling to China, ignoring abuses in Latin America, and treating U.S. sovereignty as optional. Now, under President Trump, America is taking the gloves off. If you undermine democracy, you get hit where it hurts: your wallet.
And for those still pretending this is just about trade policy, pay attention. This is a battle for who sets the rules in the 21st century—the United States, or a coalition of socialist strongmen led by Beijing. The choice is clear. We either stand firm and defend our interests, or we let tyrants like Lula and Xi write the future.
America’s back at the helm. And we’re not apologizing for it.
