On this day in 1864, Union Adm. David Farragut looked down upon the Civil War battle for the Confederate port of Mobile Bay as he perched lashed to the rigging of the USS Hartford. He and his fleet of ironclads and wooden ships faced not only the fire of nearby forts but also the maritime mine field rigged up by the Confederates in the bay.
The USS Tecumseh was sunk by a torpedo, and alarmed Union captains of other ships began to halt their ships, trying to avoid being the next torpedoed vessel. Farragut, however, was not to be thwarted in his goal. “Damn the torpedoes! Full speed ahead!” the commander roared. The USS Hartford sailed through the minefield and Farragut won a critical victory, capturing one of the last open Confederate ports.
His famous quote captured the bravest and best of the unconquerable American spirit. But do we have that spirit still today? And can we possibly save America if we do not have it?
