A Michigan man will spend decades behind bars for gunning down his wife just one day after she served him divorce papers.
Marcus Lofton, 44, was sentenced to 25 to 50 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the death of 38-year-old Alicia Lofton. Prosecutors say on August 17, 2023 — less than 24 hours after receiving the papers — Lofton shot Alicia 15 times outside their home. The couple had been married only six months.
The guilty plea came after a mistrial, when jurors failed to reach a unanimous verdict. Lofton declined to speak at his sentencing, but he listened as Alicia’s loved ones addressed the court.
Her father, Arthur Joseph, fought back tears as he faced his daughter’s killer. “I just want the world to know that this guy is a piece of garbage,” he said. “I wish I could handle this and serve justice on his a— right now.”
Court records show the couple’s relationship had spiraled after Lofton’s arrest for domestic violence in May 2023, which resulted in a no-contact order. As Alicia moved forward with divorce and plans to sell their home, tensions boiled over.
The day after the papers were served, Lofton went to the house to collect his things. An argument erupted, and he grabbed Alicia’s Glock from a drawer. She fled to the bathroom and locked the door, but Lofton forced his way in. When she tried to escape through a window, he opened fire, hitting her repeatedly before fleeing in his SUV.
Neighbors called 911 after hearing gunshots, and police found Alicia on the lawn with multiple wounds. She died at the scene. She leaves behind three adult childr
