JAMESTOWN, RI – Sunday morning took an unexpected turn for beachgoers at Heads Beach in Jamestown as they encountered an unusual and somber scene. Caution tape cordoned off the entrance, and first responders lined the shore, their presence a stark contrast to the usual sights of families enjoying the sun and surf.
The incident began just before 7:30 a.m. when a swimmer alerted Jamestown police to a potential body in the water. Soon, local patrol teams, along with the Coast Guard and Department of Environmental Management (DEM) crews, were scouring the area. Boats navigated the shallow waters just beyond the sand, while divers were deployed to search beneath the surface.
Residents of the area noted that while such recovery efforts are not unheard of, they are relatively rare. “Every once in a while, we’ll see divers under the bridge,” one local said, adding that it had been years since the last incident.
By late morning, police confirmed that a body had been retrieved and was sent to the medical examiner’s office. The cause of death remains undetermined, but locals pointed out the dangers posed by slippery rocks that jut from the shore, which are known hazards for fishermen and beachgoers alike.
“We usually sit in the sand or on the rock outlet,” a beach regular explained. “There are always people exploring or fishing there.”
This incident serves as a grim reminder of the potential dangers lurking beneath the serene surface of the water, even in familiar and seemingly safe environments.
