COMSTOCK PARK, MI – A man facing multiple charges of child sexual abuse in Maryland has connections to a church in Comstock Park. Thomas Pinkerton, who was previously involved with New Chapel Church, was arrested this week after a lengthy investigation that began last year.
Tori Grunwell, a former member of New Chapel Church, expressed concerns about Pinkerton earlier this year. She had known Pinkerton through the church, where he served as a youth leader and treasurer. Grunwell, who had longstanding ties to the church community, noticed behaviors that made her uneasy.
Pinkerton, a prominent figure at New Chapel, was actively involved in youth activities and traveled as an evangelist. However, his name was recently removed from the church’s website, and his recorded sermons have been deleted.
Grunwell reported her concerns to church authorities but found the response unsatisfactory. She claims her attempts to seek answers led to her being ostracized by the congregation. Despite the backlash, Grunwell remains determined to uncover the truth.
The investigation into Pinkerton’s alleged crimes began in Maryland when several men reported abuse occurring between 2006 and 2010. According to court documents, Pinkerton allegedly targeted young boys, often using religious justifications for his actions.
Pinkerton was recently detained in Georgia and extradited to Maryland, where he faces charges including child abuse and sexual assault. The allegations have shocked the church community, which has severed all ties with him.
New Chapel Church issued a statement expressing heartbreak over the allegations and confirmed they had communicated the situation to their congregation. The church pledged to cooperate fully with authorities to ensure justice for the victims.
Detectives suspect there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward. They urge anyone with information to contact the Baltimore County Crimes Against Children unit.
Pinkerton, who has not been charged with any crimes in Michigan, denies all allegations. His attorney stated that Pinkerton is eager to clear his name in court.
