Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was criticized as a “big-time loser” after leading Democratic opposition to President Donald Trump’s announcement that the federal government would take control of policing in Washington, D.C.
Trump held a raucous White House press conference on Monday announcing that the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department would be placed under federal control.
He also said hundreds of National Guard troops would be deployed to the city’s streets to “rescue our nation’s capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam and squalor and worse.”
Clinton, who lost the 2016 presidential election to Trump, condemned the move.
“As you listen to an unhinged Trump try to justify deploying the National Guard in DC, here’s reality: Violent crime in DC is at a 30-year low,” she said.
She referenced statistics from the Department of Justice released in January under the Biden administration, which were announced by the District’s Democratic attorney general.
White House Deputy Press Secretary Abigail Jackson quickly responded on social media, calling Clinton “a big-time loser” and “a massive liar.”
Jackson also pointed to a July news report that Resist the Mainstream has covered about Metropolitan Police Department Commander Michael Puliam, who was suspended over allegations of falsifying crime data.
Puliam denied the allegations, though they were raised by members of his own police union.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries repeated the claim that violent crime in D.C. was at a 30-year low, saying Trump “has no basis to take over the local police department” and “zero credibility on the issue of law and order.”
Conservative commentator Clay Travis responded, “Democrats are lining up to oppose crime being lower in DC. It’s bonkers.”
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized Trump’s call for federal control, asking, “For all the talk Republicans give about giving their localities their rights, where are they now?”
Schumer alleged that the decision was “a political ploy” and said that if Trump cared about the city’s residents, he would demand that House Republicans release $1 billion in D.C. funding that he claimed had been withheld for months.
The Daily Mail reported that that same night, the city experienced a fatal shooting. Metropolitan Police officers secured the scene as the investigation began.
In New York, Socialist Democrat and mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani announced what he called an “anti-Trump tour.” Mamdani said he would “fight back” if Trump attempted a similar takeover of New York City, telling CBS News the move required “a response that showcases the ability to fight back against that same agenda.”
Trump said his action fulfilled his promise to restore law and order to the nation’s capital. “We’re going to take our capital back,” he declared.
He was joined at the announcement by Attorney General Pam Bondi, U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeanine Pirro, FBI Director Kash Patel, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Interior Director Doug Burgum.
Trump said federal law enforcement would be ordered to use “aggressive tactics” against the city’s “worst offenders.”
The president also vowed to clear homeless encampments from Washington’s public parks and lands.
“Our Capital City has been overtaken by violent gangs, bloodthirsty criminals, roving mobs of wild youth, drugged out maniacs and homeless people, and we’re not going to let it happen anymore,” he said.
Trump cited several recent high-profile violent crimes in the city.
These included the August 3 attempted carjacking of 19-year-old Edward Coristine, a former Department of Government Efficiency employee known as “Big Balls,” who was attacked near the 14th Street nightlife corridor.
According to police, two 15-year-olds from Hyattsville, Maryland, were arrested and charged with unarmed carjacking in the incident.
Trump described the assault, saying Coristine “was left dripping in blood” and “thought he was dead with a broken nose and concussion.”
The Daily Mail further noted that other crimes mentioned by Trump included the fatal shooting of a 21-year-old congressional intern in a drive-by attack, the murder of a former Trump administration official during a carjacking, the armed carjacking of a Democratic congressman, the stabbing of an aide to Senator Rand Paul in 2023 and the killing of a three-year-old girl sitting in a car near the U.S. Capitol.
In a Truth Social post, Trump called for teenagers involved in violent crimes to be prosecuted as adults, saying, “They are not afraid of Law Enforcement because they know nothing ever happens to them, but it’s going to happen now!”
