A shooting outside a Target store in Austin on Monday left three people dead, one injured, and a suspect in custody.
At 2:15 p.m., police received reports of gunfire at the Target on Research Boulevard, the Austin American-Statesmen reports.
Police reported that a male suspect hijacked a car from the Target parking lot and fled, with the car’s owner among the victims found shot in the store’s parking lot.
After crashing the stolen vehicle, the suspect proceeded to steal another car from a nearby dealership.
The Austin Police Department said that two people were pronounced dead at the scene, while another victim was transported to a local hospital, where they later died.
A fourth person received treatment for injuries.
Police shot the suspect with a Taser and apprehended him in south Austin, in the 2400 block of La Costa Court, which is about 18.5 miles from the Target.
ABC News reports that, so far, police have only identified the suspect as a 32-year-old with a history of mental illness.
“This is a very sad day for Austin,” Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said during a press conference Monday afternoon. “This is a very sad day for us all.”
