On Sept. 4, Archbishop Timothy Broglio of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA, will celebrate a memorial Mass in Washington, DC, for Servant of God Father Vincent Capodanno, a Navy chaplain who was killed in Vietnam.
The annual Mass on the anniversary of Fr. Capodanno’s death will take place at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception at 6:30 p.m., according to a press release from the Capodanno Guild, a group dedicated to Fr. Capodanno’s canonization. Archbishop Broglio will serve as principal celebrant and homilist.
Fr. Capodanno is beloved by many in the armed services. A priest and member of the Maryknoll order, he was the first Navy chaplain to join Marines on the battlefield. The men he shepherded during the Vietnam War nicknamed him “the Grunt Padre” because of his tireless care for servicemen.

Fr. Capodanno was killed during a Sept. 4, 1967, ambush. Vietnamese troops attached the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines. Fr. Capodanno, who was with the battalion at the time, tended to the injured and dying, according to the Capodanno Guild. While caring for the wounded, Fr. Capodanno lost part of his right hand but continued dragging men to shelter and administering the Anointing of the Sick.
“During the course of this ambush, Fr. Capodanno ran into the open in order to assist a wounded corpsman,” the Capodanno Guild reports. “The enemy opened fire upon Fr. Capodanno and he died faithfully performing his final act as a good and faithful servant of God.”
One of the men who helped recover his body said that Fr. Capodanno “had a smile on his face,” according to the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers.
Fr. Capodanno was awarded a posthumous Medal of Honor. His cause for canonization was opened in 2002, and he was declared a Servant of God in 2006.
EWTN produced a 90-minute program on Fr. Capodanno, Called and Chosen, which will be shown on EWTN three times the week of the Mass, according to the release: Sept. 2 at 10:30 a.m., Sept. 4 at 3:30 p.m., and Sept. 5 at 5:00 a.m.
The memorial Mass is open to the public, and members of the military are encouraged to attend in uniform.
