Television host Jimmy Kimmel made headlines this week after acknowledging that certain liberal voices within the Democratic Party are “repulsive” and drive voters away from supporting progressive causes.
The late-night comedian shared these candid remarks during an appearance on the “Sarah Silverman Podcast” on Thursday, where he engaged in a discussion about cancel culture and its impact on political discourse.
During the podcast conversation, Silverman raised the topic of podcaster Joe Rogan, who faced significant backlash from liberal commentators after endorsing President Donald Trump in the 2024 election.
Silverman described the situation as “ironic,” noting that the Democratic Party, which positions itself as the party of “inclusivity,” demonstrated “incredibly elitist” behavior toward Rogan’s political choice.
Kimmel, who has been a vocal supporter of Democratic politicians and causes throughout his career, found himself defending the party while simultaneously criticizing certain progressive voices.
The ABC host clarified that the problematic voices do not represent the entire Democratic Party or its majority membership.
“Yes. But it’s not- it’s not the party. It’s not the majority. It’s the loud voices that scare people from saying what they believe and make you think twice about a joke or whatever,” Kimmel explained during the podcast.
He expanded on his criticism, suggesting that while some progressive arguments have merit, the delivery often proves counterproductive to the party’s goals.
“You know, a lot of their points are valid, but a lot of them are also just repulsive, in that they repel people,” Kimmel added.
The comedian further elaborated on how these voices impact public perception of the Democratic Party and progressive movement.
“They go like, ‘Oh, you’re no fun. I don’t want to be around you.’ And I think that if you had to boil it down to one thing, that’s kind of what it is,” he stated.
This recent commentary builds on previous statements Kimmel made in April regarding liberal criticism of comedians and entertainers.
During that earlier discussion, Kimmel argued that harsh liberal attacks on comedians contributed to Trump’s electoral success.
“I think a lot of the outrage is completely manufactured, and it’s like, a lot of these people who are angry aren’t really angry. I think these liberals who’ve done such a good job of viciously attacking comedians are a big part of the reason why Trump is the president right now,” he said in April, per Post Millennial reporting.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Kimmel made statements on his television show suggesting that unvaccinated patients should receive lower priority for hospital treatment compared to vaccinated individuals.
“Vaccinated people having a heart attack? Yes, come right on it. Unvaccinated guy who gobbled horse goo? Rest in peace, weezy,” Kimmel said, receiving applause from his studio audience.
In 2021, Kimmel addressed then-Vice President Kamala Harris’s declining approval ratings by attributing them to widespread “sexism and racism” among American voters.
The timing of Kimmel’s comments comes amid broader changes in the late-night television landscape, with his colleague Stephen Colbert recently announcing that his program will end next May.
President Trump has speculated that Kimmel could be “next” among late-night hosts to face show cancellation following Colbert’s announcement.
The discussion reflects ongoing tensions within Democratic Party circles about messaging, outreach and maintaining broad appeal to American voters.
