Rep. Raghib Allie-Brennan (D-CT) finds himself entangled in legal difficulties once again after allegedly committing theft at a Target retail location for the second time during the current summer season.
The 33-year-old Democrat lawmaker voluntarily surrendered himself to law enforcement authorities on July 28 following the formal issuance of an arrest warrant directly connected to a specific incident that occurred at a Target store located in the town of Bethel.
The Bethel Target location sits approximately 30 miles away from the city of Bridgeport and represents the exact same retail establishment where Allie-Brennan previously faced serious theft allegations during the month of June.
Store security personnel carefully documented their detailed observations of the representative during the recent incident, according to official arrest affidavit documents filed with the court.
The trained security guard personally witnessed Allie-Brennan “concealing items into the Goodfellow bag that he had selected” while moving through the retail store during his shopping visit.
The total monetary value of the allegedly stolen merchandise reached exactly $54.55, based on comprehensive reports published by the CT Mirror news organization.
Target store employees specifically informed investigating police officers that they clearly recognized the state legislator from “previous unreported larcenies” that had occurred at their retail location.
This revelation suggests a disturbing pattern of alleged theft behavior that may have extended beyond the two documented incidents currently known to authorities.
Allie-Brennan has served four consecutive terms in the Connecticut General Assembly since achieving his initial election victory in 2018, representing constituents who trusted him with their votes.
The representative has maintained a notably restrained public profile regarding the recent criminal charges, offering only a single brief statement through his personal Facebook social media account.
His limited response to the serious allegations has drawn criticism from political observers who expected more comprehensive accountability from an elected official.
“While I do not have a record, I take full responsibility for the error and am working through the legal processes to resolve the matter quickly and respectfully,” he stated in his carefully worded social media post.
Police authorities released Allie-Brennan on his personal promise to appear in state Superior Court on Aug. 5 for the scheduled legal proceedings related to the charges.
The July incident represents the second documented theft allegation against the Democrat representative in a remarkably short span of just two months.
Trending Politics reported that during the previous month of June, law enforcement authorities arrested Allie-Brennan for allegedly stealing approximately $26 worth of retail merchandise from the identical Target location in Bethel.
Following his first arrest during the summer, the lawmaker attempted to provide a public explanation for his alleged actions through a detailed Facebook post addressing the controversial incident.
“During a recent visit to the Bethel Target, two items in my armload of others were not scanned,” the representative wrote at the time, while simultaneously noting that he faced a serious 6th-degree felony charge.
The representative told authorities he was rushing to deliver items to his hospitalized grandmother when the alleged theft occurred.
“I was in a rush to bring items to my grandmother in the hospital, the store didn’t have bags, and I was juggling multiple purchases,” Allie-Brennan explained on Facebook.
Connecticut Republican leadership has seized on the repeated allegations to demand the Democrat’s resignation from office.
Connecticut Republican State Chairman Ben Proto issued a statement condemning the situation and calling for accountability.
“It is regrettable that, once again, a Democrat member of the Connecticut General Assembly has found themselves in handcuffs and subject to criminal prosecution,” Proto declared.
“In light of these allegations, Representative Allie-Brennan should step down from his position,” the Republican chairman added.
Even Democratic leadership has expressed concerns about Allie-Brennan’s conduct and the pattern of behavior.
House Speaker Matt Ritter, also a Democrat, confirmed he has discussed the situation directly with the embattled representative.
Ritter acknowledged having conversations with Allie-Brennan about what he characterized as “bizarre behavior” requiring attention.
The Speaker announced that Allie-Brennan would take time away from legislative duties to address multiple aspects of his situation.
“Raghib will take some personal time away from the legislature over the next month to deal with the legal, political and personal ramifications,” Ritter stated.
