Republican National Committee (RNC) Chair and North Carolina Senate candidate Michael Whatley declared Friday that Democrats have “learned absolutely nothing” from their significant defeats in the 2024 election cycle.
While speaking to Fox Business, Whatley criticized the Democratic Party for doubling down on what he called a “failed agenda.”
“Well, the Democrats have learned absolutely nothing coming out of 2024. They have doubled down on the same failed agenda that they ran,” Whatley said. “They are, right now, a party of open borders, inflationary spending, and a weak America.”
Whatley further claimed that Democratic leaders are steering the party away from “Main Street America” by moving further to the left.
His comments come amid ongoing struggles for Democrats to regain footing in Washington, where they hold minority status in both the House and Senate, as reported by the Conservative Brief.
Recent polling data reflects voter dissatisfaction with congressional Democrats. A mid-July Quinnipiac University national poll showed only 19 percent of Americans approved of the job Democrats are doing in Congress, while 72 percent disapproved.
Among Democrats themselves, 39 percent expressed approval of their party’s performance, with 52 percent disapproving.
Whatley, who announced his candidacy for the North Carolina Senate seat last month, pointed to Republican successes under President Donald Trump and GOP lawmakers. “Right now, we’re seeing economic growth, we’re seeing that the border has been secure, we’re seeing that America is respected across the world again,” he said.
He credited Trump for fulfilling campaign promises and praised congressional Republicans for supporting “the Trump tax cuts” and “strong support for our soldiers and our veterans,” as well as efforts to secure the southern border.
Meanwhile, Democrats have been trying to rebrand ahead of the 2026 midterms. A series of bodybuilding-themed videos featuring Democratic lawmakers surfaced recently, aiming to portray party members as strong and energetic.
One of the most widely mocked was a video from California Congressman Eric Swalwell. In the clip, Swalwell is seen bench pressing a modest amount of weight while criticizing Republicans for their defense of Trump amid calls to release the Epstein files.
“I should be working right now,” Swalwell said in the video. “I should be at the Capitol. I should be in a suit. Instead, Republicans sent us home because they would rather stand up for Donald Trump than release the Epstein files and stand up for victims.”
The video drew immediate backlash from conservatives. Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene mocked Swalwell’s bench press weight, pointing out that Congress is always out of session in August, regardless of which party controls it.
Conservative commentator Matt Walsh also weighed in, saying, “If I was a grown man who could only bench 135, you’d never see it on video unless someone secretly recorded it, and even then I would never admit it was me.”
The RNC chair’s remarks underscore ongoing divisions and intense competition between the two parties as they prepare for the next election cycle.
Democrats continue to struggle with low approval ratings and internal questions about their direction, while Republicans highlight what they describe as clear achievements under their leadership.
