President Donald Trump announced plans to address violent crime in Washington, D.C., claiming the nation’s capital will soon become “one of the safest” cities in the country.
In a post on his Truth Social account Saturday, Trump said, “It has become one of the most dangerous cities anywhere in the World. It will soon be one of the safest!!!”
He thanked the public for their attention to the issue and said a White House news conference on Monday will unveil further details of the administration’s anti-crime efforts in D.C.
The announcement comes amid rising concerns about violent crime rates in the city.
According to data from the Center for Public Safety Initiatives at Rochester Institute of Technology, Washington, D.C. had the fourth-highest homicide rate among U.S. cities in 2024, with 27.3 murders per 100,000 residents.
This rate is significantly higher than other major cities, including New York City’s 4.7 and Los Angeles’ 7.2 homicides per 100,000 residents for the same period, per the New York Post.
The homicide rate in D.C. also surpasses that of several international cities. Statistics cited by the White House show D.C.’s murder rate is more than double that of Mexico City (14 per 100,000), Port of Spain (11.5), Bogota (10.4), and Islamabad (9.2).
Federal law enforcement agencies have stepped up efforts in response to the crime surge. In a recent joint operation involving the FBI, U.S. Park Police, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), authorities arrested eight suspects overnight in Washington.
The raid led to the seizure of two stolen handguns, over 30 fentanyl-laced oxycodone pills, 210 grams of crack cocaine, 600 grams of marijuana, 64 grams of hashish oil, and $3,600 in cash, according to Kenneth Spencer, chairman of the Fraternal Order of Police.
The crackdown follows a violent incident last weekend in which Edward Coristine, a Department of Government Efficiency staffer known as “Big Balls,” was reportedly beaten during an attempted carjacking.
The attack has heightened public concern and urgency around crime in the city. Social media posts by Elon Musk showed images of Coristine injured and bloodied.
Carjackings remain a significant problem in D.C., with police reporting 333 arrests for carjacking suspects since 2023. More than half of those arrested are juveniles under 18 years old.
Trump has criticized local officials, including D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and Attorney General Brian Schwalb, for their handling of youth crime and public safety.
The president’s executive order authorized a multi-agency enforcement operation and pushed the city’s Metropolitan Police Department to increase recruitment and focus on high-crime neighborhoods.
Kenneth Spencer said the federal and local cooperation will have a “huge impact on crime in the city” and that officers have been directed to continue these efforts “until further instruction.”
Washington’s crime woes and the federal response are expected to take center stage at Monday’s White House briefing, as the administration works to demonstrate its commitment to public safety in the capital.
