Five soldiers were wounded after an active-duty sergeant opened fire at Fort Stewart with a personal handgun.
All are expected to recover. Sergeant Cornelius Radford is in custody.
Officials say fellow soldiers tackled and subdued him before law enforcement arrived.
At the end of the briefing, President Trump called the shooting an atrocity and said the suspect will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. He added that the nation is praying for the victims and their families.
