Five soldiers were wounded Wednesday morning at Fort Stewart, Georgia, after an active shooter incident prompted a base-wide lockdown. Officials reported casualties but have not released the exact number.
The soldiers were initially treated on-site before being transported to Winn Army Community Hospital for further care.
The lockdown began at 11:04 a.m., affecting multiple areas, including Wright and Evans Army Airfields and Fort Stewart Schools.
Base officials instructed all personnel to remain indoors, lock windows and doors and follow safety protocols while law enforcement secured the installation, according to the New York Post.
Three schools on the base—Kessler Elementary, Murray Elementary and Diamond Elementary—were placed under precautionary lockdown.
Superintendent Brian Perry confirmed there was no immediate threat to students and staff and promised to issue an “all clear” once authorities deemed it safe.
Law enforcement quickly apprehended the shooter, though authorities have not released the suspect’s identity.
Fort Stewart officials emphasized that there is “no active threat to the community” following the arrest.
Social media footage showed soldiers seeking shelter in the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team section of the base, approximately 40 miles southwest of Savannah.
The videos captured the rapid response of personnel during the incident.
President Donald Trump was briefed on the situation, and the White House is reportedly monitoring developments closely, the Daily Mail reports.
Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA), whose district includes Fort Stewart, confirmed that he is actively following the unfolding events.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) also issued a statement urging constituents to pray for those affected.
In addition, Sen. Raphael Warnock (D) said he is closely monitoring the situation.
“I’m heartbroken to see the news of an active shooter incident at Fort Stewart today. I’m monitoring the situation closely and join all of Georgia as we pray for the safety of our servicemembers, staff, and their families,” he wrote on X.
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) described the incident as a “tragedy” and confirmed his administration has been in contact with law enforcement.
“We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers,” Kemp said.
Fort Stewart spans 280,000 acres in southeast Georgia, making it the largest U.S. Army installation east of the Mississippi River.
It serves as the home of the 3rd Infantry Division and a training area for multiple military units.
More than 10,000 soldiers, civilian employees and family members reside on the base, according to The Post.
Authorities have not released details regarding the motive behind the shooting.
Investigations are ongoing, and heightened security measures remain in place to ensure the safety of all personnel and families on the installation.
The Fort Stewart shooting marks the first active shooter event at a U.S. military base since the Naval Air Station Pensacola attack in Florida on December 6, 2019.
In that incident, shooter Mohammed Saeed Alshamrani, a second lieutenant in the Royal Saudi Air Force, killed three U.S. Navy personnel and injured eight others, according to ABC News.
The FBI investigated the attack as an act of terrorism and the shooter was neutralized by law enforcement.
