Texas redistricting led to a clash on Fox News as Tomi Lahren and Jessica Tarlov traded barbs over “political stunts” and “hypocrisy.”
“We’re gonna be cutthroat …”

Having fled their state to delay approval of redrawn congressional district maps, Democrats from the Texas House now face a new deadline to return or be ousted from their seats. After discussing the latest in the fight drawing national attention with Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows (R), Fox News’s Martha MacCallum teed up a tussle between commentators that had one leveling, “We learned this from you!”
Clips played on “The Story” from MSNBC host Joe Scarborough and California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) commenting on the dispute in Texas set up GOPAC Chairman David Avella to direct remarks at Tarlov as he said, “Well, the Texas speaker and legislature are operating within the law, Texas House Democrats are not. You get to pick your side.”
“And let me also — Jessica, do these people not have jobs? I mean, how do they just like walk away from their job? What company can keep these Texas legislators from being able to not perform their real jobs, or their other jobs in addition to being in the state legislature? It makes no sense.”
After being shown the congressional district map of Illinois with its deliberately carved out districts, the regular of “The Five” acknowledged, “Yeah, I certainly can see that argument, and there are other states that you could show, frankly, that are controlled by Democrats and Republicans that have similar comically drawn lines. But Gavin Newsom and [Illinois Gov.] J.B. Pritzker are absolutely correct. Democrats are sick and tired of showing up to fights with the wrong weaponry.”
Ironic to see reports Democrats are abandoning their job in Texas over “redistricting” by traveling to Illinois. The Democrat drawn congressional map in Illinois over-performs in favor of Democrats by about 30 points (82.23% of seats vs. 52.78% of the vote in 2024) compared to… pic.twitter.com/t0um6zjuLh

“We’ve been pushed around by [Kentucky Sen.] Mitch McConnell and the Republicans for far too long. And of course, we’re gonna take the opportunity when we see it to redistrict in a way that is favorable to us,” she went on. “We would be stupid not to. But it doesn’t change the facts on the ground. There was a bill in 2021 that all the Democrats supported that would have had a national ban on redistricting in this way, and all the Republicans opposed it.”
Tarlov then went on to claim that the annual August recess was actually House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) avoiding a vote on releasing files pertaining to Jeffrey Epstein. “He said, let’s go home, rather than talk about the fact that [President] Donald Trump may or may not have been in there. So, be equal opportunity in your complaints about fleeing your job — at least they’re doing this for a good reason.”
It was then that Outkick’s Lahren was given the opportunity to unload on the “stunts” routinely pulled by elected Democrats.
“First of all, the Democrat Party has been reduced to essentially a social media stunt at this point. That’s the only way they can get any attention,” she argued. “It’s not through legislation, it’s not through ideas or policy, it’s through stunts; whether it’s getting arrested at a press conference, or outside of an ICE facility, or skipping work to go to Illinois.”
“Also, the hypocrisy here, for Democrats now to clutch their pearls when Republicans play the same way that they’ve been playing, is really rich. Please spare me. Also incredibly hypocritical,” continued Lahren. “Democrats had no problem for a four-year span of time importing millions and millions of people into blue sanctuary states and cities to pad their numbers to pad the census. But now they want to cry wolf, and they wanna cry crocodile tears because Republicans want to draw new maps in Texas.”
“Democrats would do it every single time. They don’t like it that Republicans are playing the same game. We learned from you! We’re gonna be cutthroat like Democrats, and we’re going to win where we can,” she concluded.
Moments before the broadcast, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) demonstrated just how cutthroat Republicans were willing to be in the fight as he followed through with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s (R) threat to declare seats of those who fled their responsibilities vacant.
In accord with Burrows’ deadline of Aug. 8 for members to return to the House, the Lone Star State’s top cop released a statement on the pursuit of judicial orders to remove the absent legislators. “Starting Friday, any rogue lawmakers refusing to return to the House will be held accountable for vacating their office. The people of Texas elected lawmakers, not jet-setting runaways looking for headlines. If you don’t show up to work, you get fired.”
BREAKING: I will seek judicial orders declaring that runaway Democrats who fail to appear by the Speaker’s deadline have vacated their office.

Before the segment closed on “The Story,” a point was made that the loss of Democratic seats in the U.S. House was bound to happen now or by the next U.S. Census as MacCallum contended it was “fair to say” that leftist policies were driving voters away from blue states, leading to the likely decrease in constitutionally apportioned representatives.
