Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, has taken a new role as director of development for BASTA Inc., a Los Angeles-based nonprofit organization focused on eviction defense.
The move comes as reports indicate that Hunter Biden is facing millions of dollars in legal debt following several high-profile court cases and ongoing investigations.
In an interview released Tuesday with journalist Andrew Callaghan, Hunter discussed his work with BASTA and emphasized the organization’s role in providing legal representation to vulnerable tenants, including illegal immigrants.
The interview marked one of Hunter’s few public appearances following his conviction and presidential pardon.
“There’s such an opportunity to be of service right now and not in … some kind of melodramatic, you know, way,” Hunter said during the interview.
“A lot of people that are getting the shit beat out of them out there right here in LA, and there’s an enormous opportunity for just normal people to do kind of heroic things, whether it’s protecting somebody that’s about to get kidnapped off a street.”
BASTA Inc. was co-founded by Bryan Sullivan, who serves as the nonprofit’s chief financial officer.
Sullivan previously represented Hunter Biden in several defamation lawsuits, all of which failed in court.
His involvement with the organization and continued connection to Hunter has drawn attention as the president’s son transitions into a public service role while dealing with legal and financial challenges, according to Daily Caller reporting.
Hunter claimed in the interview that BASTA is the only organization in Southern California providing legal representation to undocumented immigrants facing eviction.
“We’re the only group, in at least Southern California, that represents undocumented, and so we don’t take any federal money,” he said.
He added that the organization represents more than just Central American immigrants.
“It’s not just El Salvadorian immigrants. It’s Ukrainian immigrants that came in under duress from what’s going on in Ukraine and find it really hard to find work because of the fear of employers that they’re going to disrupt their business because of ICE raids and things like that,” he said.
“And then they lose their income. And almost all of these people are families and children. And if you can keep someone in their apartment or their home, you obviously also keeping somebody off the street in homelessness.”
Several nonprofit and legal aid organizations in Southern California, however, also provide services to so-called undocumented migrants, including those who are detained or involved in labor disputes.
The Daily Caller further noted that while BASTA focuses specifically on eviction cases, it is not the only group offering legal assistance to migrants in the region.
Hunter’s legal troubles have persisted for years.
The New York Post reported that in 2024, he asked the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to pay for his mounting legal fees tied to federal tax and firearms-related charges.
It is unclear whether the DNC agreed to assist financially.
Kevin Morris, a longtime associate of Hunter Biden and his primary financial backer in recent years, told House Republicans in January 2024 that Hunter’s legal fees had reached approximately $5 million.
Morris had been paying for much of Hunter’s legal defense but was running out of funds by mid-2024, according to a report by Politico,
“The reason Kevin got involved financially in the first place was that he could see that no one was going to help Hunter,” a source told the outlet.
“Now, four and a half years later, there’s still no help — and now Kevin is completely tapped out. So just when Hunter is facing two criminal trials starting in a few weeks, he has no resources. It’s pretty dire.”
Hunter Biden was convicted on gun-related charges in June 2024, stemming from accusations that he lied on a federal form about drug use when purchasing a firearm.
President Joe Biden issued a pardon to his son in December 2024, despite earlier public assurances that he would not intervene in the case.
