President Donald Trump signaled Tuesday that he may authorize a federal takeover of Washington, D.C., following a violent assault on a staff member of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
The staffer was reportedly injured while intervening in an attempted carjacking in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Trump made the announcement on his Truth Social platform, citing what he described as a breakdown of law and order in the nation’s capital.
“Crime in Washington, D.C., is totally out of control,” Trump wrote.
“Local ‘youths’ and gang members, some only 14, 15, and 16-years-old, are randomly attacking, mugging, maiming, and shooting innocent Citizens, at the same time knowing that they will be almost immediately released.”
The president went on to criticize the District’s criminal justice system for what he characterized as leniency toward juvenile offenders.
“They are not afraid of Law Enforcement because they know nothing ever happens to them, but it’s going to happen now! The Law in D.C. must be changed to prosecute these ‘minors’ as adults, and lock them up for a long time, starting at age 14,” Trump wrote.
He then referenced a specific incident involving a DOGE employee who was injured while reportedly attempting to help a woman being assaulted by a group of suspects.
Trump’s post included a photo of the staffer with visible injuries seated on the sidewalk while police officers responded.
The staffer was identified by online researchers as Edward Coristine, a well-known figure on social media who had previously gained recognition under the screen name “Big Balls.”
Coristine has played a public-facing role in identifying and exposing waste, fraud and abuse in federal agencies through his work with DOGE.
The attack has drawn national attention, particularly after Elon Musk, former chief of DOGE, confirmed the incident and supported Trump’s call for a federal response.
“A few days ago, a gang of about a dozen young men tried to assault a woman in her car at night in DC,” Musk posted on X.
“A [DOGE] team member saw what was happening, ran to defend her and was severely beaten to the point of concussion, but he saved her.”
Musk added, “It’s time to federalize DC.”
Trump echoed that sentiment in a follow-up statement on Truth Social, warning city leaders that if they failed to restore public safety, he would act.
“If the D.C. leadership doesn’t clean up the mess, I will have no choice but to take Federal control of the City, and run this City how it should be run, and put criminals on notice that they’re not going to get away with it anymore,” he said.
The Metropolitan Police Department confirmed that an incident occurred at approximately 3:00 a.m. on Sunday in the 1400 block of Swann Street NW.
According to the police report, suspects approached victims standing near a vehicle and demanded the car before physically assaulting one of the individuals.
Trending Politics (TP) highlighted that NBC 4 Washington reported that the suspects fled the scene after a Metropolitan Police cruiser arrived.
Two suspects—a 15-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl from Hyattsville, Maryland—were apprehended and charged with unarmed carjacking.
D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb issued a statement in response to the incident.
“No one who lives, works or visits D.C. should experience this; it is horrific and disturbing,” Schwalb said, per TP.
“I cannot comment on specific cases, but know that when MPD brings us cases with sufficient evidence of juveniles who have broken the law and hurt people, we will prosecute them and ensure they face consequences for their actions.”
At the time of publication, the DOGE agency had not released an official statement regarding Coristine’s condition. However, multiple online reports indicated that he suffered a concussion and other injuries but is expected to recover.
