Senator Susan Collins (R-ME), long considered a moderate voice within the Republican Party, may be facing mounting challenges ahead of her 2026 reelection bid, particularly due to her repeated departures from President Donald Trump’s agenda. A new survey by Morning Consult reveals a steep decline in her approval rating among Maine voters. According to the data, 54% of respondents expressed disapproval of her job performance—the highest figure recorded for Collins since the polling firm began tracking her numbers eight years ago. Just 38% reported approval.
This drop follows a pattern. Late 2024 saw her approval at 47%, with disapproval at 44%. A quarter earlier, she had been at 50% approval. The new figures suggest a steady erosion of support, particularly after a summer in which she opposed key elements of the president’s legislative priorities.
Her vote against the popular ‘One Big, Beautiful Bill’ signed by President Trump on Independence Day was one of the most contentious actions. Collins voiced concerns about proposed changes to the Medicaid program as one of just three Republicans in the Senate to vote against the bill. Collins explained her choice in a statement published on X, claiming that the plan may have cut Medicaid spending by $5.9 billion over the following 10 years, endangering rural hospitals in her state and putting low-income citizens’ access to healthcare at risk.
While claiming support for tax relief for families and small businesses, Collins proposed an amendment to hike taxes on ultra-high earners, individuals making more than $25 million annually. That move further isolated her from GOP economic conservatives and Trump allies who saw the legislation as a long-overdue win.
Despite the fallout, Collins remains committed to running for reelection in 2026. She has not launched an official campaign but has publicly indicated her intention to seek another term. Fundraising efforts appear to remain strong, with her campaign reportedly holding $5 million in cash on hand. A super PAC backing her has collected $5.6 million so far this year, while the NRSC has begun airing supportive advertisements.
Still, grassroots Republicans have grown increasingly vocal about her deviation from the MAGA movement. The sentiment may be further intensified by speculation that the White House is considering possible replacements if she chooses to retire—a move that, if realized, could dramatically shift the balance of the party’s leadership in the upper chamber.
Jason Savage, Executive Director of the Maine GOP, offered a more optimistic perspective, defending the senator’s record and describing her work as impactful across all communities in the state. According to Savage, the people of Maine will remember her contributions when the time to vote arrives.
Yet, with the 2026 race on the horizon and discontent brewing, it remains to be seen whether Collins’ centrist brand can survive in a Republican Party that has grown increasingly aligned with President Trump’s America First platform.
