The Trump administration on Friday celebrated another month of record-low activity along the U.S.-Mexico border, crediting its tough enforcement policies for the continued decline in illegal crossings.
In July, for the third straight month, Border Patrol agents released zero migrants into the U.S. interior, according to a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) press release. The figures mark a sharp contrast to the Biden-era highs, when tens of thousands of illegal migrants were released each month.
“History made, again. The numbers don’t lie — this is the most secure the border has ever been,” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said in a statement.
“President Trump didn’t just manage the crisis — he obliterated it. No more excuses. No more releases,” she continued. “We’ve put the cartels on defense and taken our border back.”
Preliminary Records Set in July:
- Lowest Nationwide Encounters Ever: 24,630 — down 2.4% from June and nearly 90% below the monthly average under the previous administration.
- Lowest Nationwide Border Patrol Apprehensions: 6,177 — breaking June’s all-time low.
- Lowest Southwest Border Apprehensions: 4,598 — nearly 500 less than the daily average under the last administration, which saw 5,110 apprehensions per day from Feb. 2021 to Dec. 2024.
- Lowest Daily Apprehension Average: Just 148 per day — lower than the two-hour average of 152 under Biden in July 2024.
- Lowest Single-Day Apprehensions in History: 88 at the Southwest border; 116 nationwide on July 20.
“Stats don’t lie. Border security is national security, and we will continue to unapologetically enforce our nation’s laws,” Border Patrol Chief Michael Banks posted Friday on X.
