A shocking stabbing attack at a South London business has left a beloved father and his star athlete son dead — and now police have arrested a suspect in connection with the double homicide.
The attack occurred around 1:00 p.m. on Monday, July 28, at a business unit on Long Lane in Bermondsey, where police say four men were stabbed.
Fifty-eight-year-old property developer Terry McMillan was pronounced dead at the scene, while his 27-year-old son Brendan McMillan later died at the hospital from his injuries. Two other men — one in his 30s and another 47 — were treated for non-life-threatening wounds.
According to authorities, a 31-year-old man was arrested shortly after the attack. Police tracked him to a nearby hotel, where he was taken into custody and treated for minor injuries. While there were initial rumors the suspect had been staying at the hotel, police confirmed that was not the case.
The stabbing took place inside the office of the Trademark Group, a property company founded by Terry McMillan in 1998. Alongside his business work, Terry was known for his charity efforts through The McMillan Family Trust, launched in 2007.
Brendan, his youngest son, was not only a bright young man but a standout athlete. He studied sports management at the University of Gloucestershire and was a rising star in London’s rugby community. He played for the Old Colfeians rugby club, where he was widely admired both on and off the field.
In a heartbreaking tribute, the club wrote, “Yesterday, Old Colfeians lost a member of our family, one of the kindest, funniest, most genuine people you could ever meet. Brendan lit up every room he walked into… His absence will be deeply felt for a long time to come.”
They also honored Terry’s legacy, writing, “We are also mourning the loss of his beloved father, Terry, a longtime supporter and sponsor of the club. Our thoughts and prayers are with their family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.”
Photos from the scene show forensic tents set up outside the business as police continue their investigation. Detectives are working to determine what led to the attack, which they believe to be targeted and isolated.
“Our thoughts are first and foremost with the family and friends of the victims of this tragic incident,” said Detective Chief Superintendent Emma Bond. “Our investigation continues at pace and we are working hard to understand the full circumstances.”
Neil Coyle, the MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, called the incident “truly awful” and echoed that it appeared to be targeted.
