President Donald Trump’s secretary of Defense continues to suffer bad press, with recent reports indicating that the head of the department could soon be pushed out.
According to an article in the Daily Mail, there is a strong current at the Pentagon at present, with officials from various areas of the Defense Department denouncing Hegseth as unfit for his role.
The effort has gone so far that there has been a letter making its way through the agency, aiming to speak to that fact.
Reports stated that the letter moving through high and mid-level employees of the Department of Defense (DOD) is meant to “let the American public know this guy has no clue what he’s doing.”
Defenders fire back
The backlash against Hegseth has not sat well with some in the department, however, and some employees who are loyal to the Trump-appointed military leader have come to his defense.
DoD spokesman Sean Parnell called the letter “palace intrigue” and said it was “sensationalized mainstream media gossip.”
Parnell also said that his and the broader department’s take on the situation is that Americans “don’t care about” the kind of accusations in the letter, “they care about action.”
From the inside
Three officials from the Pentagon spoke anonymously to the Mail, allegedly out of fear of losing their jobs or even of prosecution by the Trump administration, suggesting that change at the top could be coming soon.
The officials, two military and one civilian, each with at least 20 years of service, said they are concerned that the Trump administration would replace them with those who have less experience, because they would be less likely to challenge Hegseth.
The trio also said that the letter calling for Hegseth’s removal will not be made public just yet.
Descriptions of its content range from concerns about politicized decisions and low morale, as well as dysfunction within the department, not to mention paranoia from Hegseth about possible dissent within the ranks.
More complaints emerge
Another complaint from those concerned about the current state of the Pentagon pointed to an unexpected change in leadership, namely, the ouster of the first female head of the U.S. Naval Academy last week, a move some say is a red flag.
Vice Adm. Yvette Davids was removed from her position as the first female superintendent of the academy in Annapolis, Maryland, just days ago.
Davids is now one of five senior female service members who have been removed from their roles since January of this year, leading some to conclude that bias could be at play.
