The Biden administration’s raid on Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate may have been driven by a deeper motive than previously reported, according to Devin Nunes, chair of the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board.
Speaking on Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo, Nunes said newly declassified documents point to the possibility that the FBI raid in August 2022 was aimed at recovering materials tied to the now-discredited Trump-Russia investigation known as Crossfire Hurricane.
The raid, carried out by federal agents at Trump’s Florida home, was initially presented to the public as part of a criminal probe into the former president’s handling of classified documents.
Nunes stated that intelligence tied to the 2016 election may have been the real target, however.
“Whatever they were looking for, they clearly couldn’t find,” Nunes said.
“They were trying to stop President Trump from being reelected.”
Nunes pointed to the recent declassification of a 45-page report from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI).
He said this report had been withheld from public view for years, despite its significance.
The report allegedly contradicts the long-promoted narrative that Russian President Vladimir Putin sought to help Donald Trump win the presidency in 2016.
“We went through every single piece of intelligence that existed,” Nunes stated.
“If anything, it was clear that if Putin was going to do anything, he probably wanted Hillary Clinton to win.”
The intelligence report, which Nunes claims undermines the foundational argument behind Crossfire Hurricane, is now being declassified and made available to the public.
Nunes, who was previously chair of the House Intelligence Committee, said he would continue efforts to release more suppressed information related to the origins of the Russia investigation.
“As chairman of the president’s intelligence board, I’m going to try to get out as much of this information as possible and get it declassified,” he said.
When asked by Bartiromo whether he believed the FBI was searching for this particular document during the raid on Trump’s home, Nunes responded, “It had to be one of the things they were looking for. That report is damning if people take the time to read it.”
President Trump posted on Truth Social Friday that the Department of Justice has returned the materials seized during the 2022 raid.
He said the documents would eventually be included in the Trump Presidential Library.
“The Department of Justice has just returned the boxes that Deranged Jack Smith made such a big deal about,” Trump wrote.
“They are being brought down to Florida and will someday be part of the Trump Presidential Library. Justice finally won out.”
Special Counsel Jack Smith led the investigation into whether Trump unlawfully retained classified documents after leaving office.
The DOJ defended the search warrant used in the raid as part of this ongoing probe.
At the time, the Biden White House denied any prior knowledge of the decision to approve the Mar-a-Lago raid.
The administration insisted that the Department of Justice acted independently, although Republican leaders and Trump supporters claimed political motivations were at play.
Nunes emphasized that the return of the documents and the release of the ODNI report both suggest a broader pattern of intelligence suppression and political targeting.
He added that the recent establishment of a new “strike force” within the Department of Justice to investigate misconduct in the intelligence community is a welcome development.
“There’s a lot more to do with this,” Nunes said.
He did not provide specific details on upcoming disclosures but indicated that more information could emerge in the coming months.
The Crossfire Hurricane investigation, launched in 2016, sought to determine whether the Trump campaign coordinated with Russian officials to influence the presidential election.
It led to the appointment of Special Counsel Robert Mueller and dominated headlines for years.
Although Mueller’s final report found no sufficient evidence of criminal conspiracy between Trump and Russia, the investigation’s legacy continued to shape political discourse.
Later reviews, including Special Counsel John Durham’s investigation, raised serious concerns about how the FBI opened and conducted the original probe.
Durham’s findings cited improper procedures, lack of verified intelligence and significant lapses in oversight by senior FBI officials.
The case became a focal point of Republican critiques of the intelligence community.
