A tragic shooting on the University of New Mexico campus has left one person dead and another injured, sending shockwaves through the student body just weeks into the summer session.
The incident occurred early Friday morning, July 25, near the Casas del Rio student housing complex in Albuquerque. Police were called to the scene around 3:00 a.m., though some students reported hearing gunfire as early as midnight.
“I just heard like three loud pops… then we looked out the window and saw people running around,” said Jubilee Tasi, a freshman from Seattle. “It was really confusing. We called it a night after that and went to sleep.”
Tasi had only been living on campus since June and said nothing like this had happened before. “What happened last night is just crazy,” the student added. “I’m still trying to get used to the environment over here.”
A shelter-in-place alert was issued for the central campus area Friday morning as police secured the scene. UNM officials told students it was safe to return to their dorms and eat at the campus dining hall La Posada, but urged everyone to stay away from the active crime scene.
Later that afternoon, U.S. Marshals located and arrested a suspect in Los Lunas, according to local outlet KOB 4. The identities of the victims and the suspect have not yet been made public.
UNM President Garnett Stokes addressed the campus community on social media, confirming that “multiple shots were fired in the early morning in our Casas del Rio student housing,” resulting in one fatality and one person hospitalized.
The university has since urged students and faculty to monitor emails, text alerts, and the LoboGuardian app for further updates as the investigation continues. Multiple law enforcement agencies remain involved.
The UNM Police Department has not yet issued a detailed statement.
