The FBI has opened a sweeping criminal investigation into what officials are calling a decade-long conspiracy to interfere in multiple U.S. elections. The inquiry reportedly targets Democratic Party operatives and alleged deep-state actors.
President Donald Trump’s former acting Defense Department chief of staff, Kash Patel, who now serves as FBI Director, launched the probe several weeks ago. Sources close to the matter told Just the News that this investigation might lead to the appointment of a special prosecutor.
Officials say the investigation is looking into possible connections between the Trump-Russia collusion narrative, the prosecutions by Special Counsel Jack Smith, and other events that may collectively represent a coordinated criminal conspiracy.
According to sources, momentum behind the investigation could increase if Trump decides to declassify two critical sets of documents. These classified materials date back to 2016 and could reveal significant misconduct.
The first is a classified annex from the inspector general’s report on Hillary Clinton’s private email server. Senate Judiciary Chair Chuck Grassley has reportedly pursued the release of this annex for years. It allegedly contains intelligence that was ignored by the FBI at the time.
The second document set involves information from Special Counsel John Durham’s final report, which refers to so-called “Clinton plan intelligence.” This information points to early awareness by intelligence agencies that the Clinton campaign was promoting a false Russia collusion narrative, per the Conservative Brief.
Durham’s report revealed that the FBI proceeded with the Crossfire Hurricane investigation despite knowing that much of the information came from Clinton’s campaign and associates. The annexes remain classified due to concerns about protecting sensitive intelligence methods.
CIA Director John Ratcliffe has also criticized how intelligence agencies handled the 2016 Russia allegations. Earlier this month, he accused former CIA Director John Brennan of prioritizing political objectives over analytical integrity.
Ratcliffe claimed Trump was subjected to an “atypical & corrupt process” under Brennan and former FBI Director James Comey. He argued that Trump was unfairly targeted by a politically motivated intelligence campaign.
If Trump declassifies the documents, officials say they could be used to demonstrate to a grand jury that federal agencies selectively ignored evidence damaging to Democrats while aggressively pursuing cases against Trump.
There is also talk of appointing a special prosecutor to look into a 2020 intelligence report that China planned to interfere in the election by distributing fake mail-in ballots to help Joe Biden. The FBI allegedly instructed agencies to ignore and destroy this intelligence.
The statute of limitations on that 2020 incident is nearing expiration, but officials say the broader conspiracy case might allow older and newer misconduct to be tied together as part of an ongoing scheme.
By framing the actions as part of a continuing conspiracy, prosecutors may be able to seat a grand jury outside of Washington, D.C., where Trump-related cases have rarely resulted in convictions.
Florida is being seriously considered as a venue. Officials point to events like the 2022 raid on Mar-a-Lago as part of the timeline, keeping certain charges within legal time limits.
A former federal prosecutor stated that Florida would be a strategic venue, with strong legal justification. If a special prosecutor is appointed, the case could explore whether government officials conspired to sway the 2016, 2020, and 2024 elections.
Democratic figures such as Clinton, Brennan, Comey, and Smith have denied any criminal intent, though they have acknowledged mistakes were made during their investigations and decisions.
However, congressional Republicans have presented evidence that these so-called mistakes were deliberate and politically motivated.
The FBI investigation is expected to examine various Trump-related cases that relied on misleading or fabricated evidence. Officials hope the “grand conspiracy” probe will prove a coordinated effort to weaponize law enforcement against a single political figure.
