Former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi delivered a speech on Friday aimed at young liberal activists, but her remarks left many puzzled due to frequent stops and starts.
Pelosi, now 85 years old, has generated viral attention this year for awkward moments, including snapping at a reporter who asked about her running for a 20th term and using a walker while moving around the Capitol.
At the Voters of Tomorrow summit in Washington, Pelosi addressed Gen Z activists, focusing on the issue of income inequality.
She criticized what she described as “shareholder capitalism,” highlighting the vast pay gap between company CEOs and ordinary workers.
Pelosi stated that CEOs earn 300 to 400 times more than their employees, pointing out that it would take workers a lifetime to earn what a CEO makes in a single year.
Using hand gestures, she emphasized the unfairness of this wage disparity and claimed that even CEOs have expressed concern over it, asserting this is not true capitalism, per the Daily Mail.
During her speech, Pelosi became sidetracked trying to estimate how many years a worker would need to match a CEO’s earnings, jokingly saying one would have to go back before the American Revolution.
She condemned the income gap as unjust, undemocratic, shameful, and something that must be challenged.
Pelosi then declared that fighting to cancel budget cuts, which she linked to President Donald Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill,” was a key part of that effort.
She urged reason and listening to younger voices about future priorities while framing the fight as a shared cause.
At one point, Pelosi struggled to conclude, saying, “I’ll just, again, close by saying… and I mean it this time…” before noting she was from Baltimore and asking if any Marylanders or Californians were present.
She referenced the Star-Spangled Banner, written in Baltimore, and recited a favorite line as she wrapped up her remarks.
Reaction on social media was swift and mostly negative, especially among conservatives who mocked Pelosi’s speech.
One critic questioned whether Pelosi was intoxicated, calling her words “gibberish” and expressing disbelief that her audience could understand her.
Others attacked Pelosi’s record, accusing her of hypocrisy for allegedly profiting from insider stock trading, while some sarcastically compared her speech to those of other California politicians.
Pelosi has faced health challenges recently, including a fall in Europe last December that required hip replacement surgery.
This injury led to images of Pelosi using a walking frame to navigate the Capitol floor, which some critics ridiculed by calling Congress a “nursing home.”
Despite these physical setbacks, Pelosi remains an active figure in Democratic politics, though her recent public appearances have drawn increased scrutiny and criticism.
Her speech Friday is part of ongoing efforts to connect with younger voters, but the awkward delivery and fragmented thoughts sparked widespread mockery online.
The focus on income inequality and corporate pay gaps echoes long-standing Democratic concerns but was overshadowed by the confusing presentation.
President Donald Trump’s policies, including the budget referred to by Pelosi, remain a point of contention in debates over economic fairness and government spending.
