More than 320,000 migrant children went missing under the Biden administration amid a surge of illegal immigration that overwhelmed U.S. border enforcement capabilities.
The massive influx created what some officials have described as the largest humanitarian and logistical failure in modern immigration history.
In a major development, President Donald Trump’s administration has reportedly located at least 13,000 of those missing children, marking a significant step toward reuniting them with their families or removing them from dangerous environments. Trump officials framed the effort as a nationwide rescue mission.
One troubling case involved a Guatemalan national, Adelso Garcia Martinez, who was arrested in Newark, New Jersey, on May 13. Martinez, wanted for homicide in his home country, was found to be sponsoring one of the missing children.
ICE officials said the case highlights the dangers of the previous administration’s vetting failures, Trending Politics reported.
“It is deplorable to imagine that a wanted fugitive would find illegal shelter in the United States with a child in tow and later go on to sponsor another alien,” said ICE HSI Newark Special Agent in Charge Ricky Patel following the arrest. His comments reflected broader concerns about how sponsors were approved.
Before the 2024 election, Biden administration officials admitted they had lost track of over 320,000 children who had crossed the U.S.-Mexico border during the migrant crisis. Some reports suggested that as many as 12 million illegal immigrants entered the country during that period.
Due to the emergency, many of those who volunteered to sponsor children were not adequately vetted. Officials later acknowledged that some of these children may have been placed in the care of fugitives, violent criminals, or sexual predators.
President Donald Trump’s Department of Homeland Security launched an investigation in February 2025 to locate the missing children and assess the scope of the abuse. Officials warned at the time that some of the kids were likely victims of exploitation or human trafficking.
“Children are being saved,” a Trump administration official told the New York Post in a statement summarizing the ongoing operation. The rescue effort spans multiple states and involves coordination between federal and local authorities.
In one of the most disturbing cases, a 15-year-old girl was found pregnant after being allegedly abused for years by an Ecuadoran man who had crossed the border with her. He reportedly convinced his mother to sponsor the girl, allowing her to remain in their home.
Authorities in New York arrested the man on May 28 near his residence in Harlem. DHS officials said the girl had been abused since she was 13 years old, shortly after arriving in the United States.
So far, at least 442 sponsors have been arrested in connection with the Trump administration’s efforts to track down the missing children. Many of those arrested had outstanding warrants, according to U.S. Health and Human Services sources.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem condemned the Biden administration’s immigration policies in a statement Friday. She called them a catalyst for what she described as “the largest human-trafficking operation in modern history.”
“By leaving our borders open and even encouraging people to come here illegally, Biden enabled this crisis,” Noem stated.
She added that the current administration, led by Trump, has a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” to dismantle the trafficking networks that exploit the country’s broken border system.
