INDIANAPOLIS, IN – Authorities have unveiled new details about the man involved in a fatal shooting that claimed the life of his wife. Walter McNary, 76, a convicted felon, illegally possessed the firearms used in the incident.
McNary, who shot his wife before being fatally wounded by police on 32nd Street, had a history of criminal behavior. In 2012, he was convicted in a domestic violence case. A mugshot from the Indiana Department of Corrections reveals McNary in 2011 during a prison stint for violating probation related to drug charges, from which he was released just before Christmas.
Court documents detail a harrowing incident in May 2012. McNary reportedly returned home at 4 a.m., waking his wife, Nola, with physical violence. He hit, choked, and threatened to kill her. He later accepted a plea deal, resulting in probation and a mandate to attend 26 weeks of domestic violence counseling.
Thirteen years later, tragedy struck again. On North Ritter Avenue, McNary shot Nola just after 7 a.m. Family members disclosed that Nola had been staying with her sister to distance herself from her husband.
A close friend of Nola expressed shock at the event, emphasizing the hidden nature of domestic struggles. “Behind every smile could be some sadness,” the friend remarked, highlighting the importance of recognizing warning signs in domestic disputes.
