NASSAU COUNTY, FL – Authorities in Nassau County are investigating a tragic shooting that claimed the lives of three people and left another in critical condition. A five-year-old girl emerged as the sole survivor of the incident, which unfolded in a home on West 12th Street.
Deputies responded to the scene around 8 p.m. on the previous night after reports of gunfire. Upon entering the residence, they discovered three women deceased, each found in different locations within the home. A man, identified as 34-year-old Christopher Rout, was found with a gunshot wound to the head, and an assault-style rifle was nearby. Rout was transported to a hospital and is currently considered clinically dead.
In a press conference, Sheriff Bill Leeper described the young girl as remarkably brave. She managed to escape the scene and alert a neighbor about the shooting. The sheriff revealed that the girl had been hiding in a bathroom during the ordeal.
The sheriff’s office continues to investigate the relationships between the victims and the shooter, who were all related. However, specific details about their familial connections remain undisclosed.
Authorities confirmed that there had been previous calls to the residence, including one during the COVID-19 pandemic and another a few months ago, though no substantial evidence was found at that time.
As the investigation progresses, the community remains on edge, seeking answers and justice for the victims. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
