Conservative commentator Meghan McCain called for CNN host Kaitlan Collins to have her White House press credentials revoked following a heated exchange on Wednesday between Collins, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard.
The incident occurred during an official afternoon press briefing at the White House, where Gabbard faced questions about her recent decision to declassify intelligence reports.
The documents reportedly indicate that former President Barack Obama and members of his administration manipulated intelligence data to falsely suggest that former President Donald Trump colluded with Russia ahead of the 2016 election.
Kaitlan Collins, a CNN prime-time anchor and current White House correspondent, pressed Gabbard during the briefing, asking, “What would you say to people who believe that you’re only releasing these documents now to improve your standing with the president after he said that your intelligence assessments were wrong?”
Gabbard responded, defending her decision and challenging the premise of the question.
“The Senate Intelligence Committee has a very different function than the Office of the Director of National Intelligence,” she said.
“The evidence and the intelligence that has been declassified and released is irrefutable.”
Leavitt, standing beside Gabbard during the exchange, intervened to address Collins’ question and criticize the media.
“The only people who are suggesting that the director of national intelligence would release evidence to try to boost her standing with the president are the people in this room who constantly try to sow distrust and chaos amongst the president’s cabinet,” Leavitt said.
She continued by affirming the administration’s confidence in Gabbard. “President Trump has complete confidence in Director Gabbard, and the American people deserve the truth—not political gamesmanship from reporters who push partisan narratives.”
Shortly after the press conference, McCain took to X to denounce Collins’ conduct.
“Kaitlan Collins is an absolute imbecile and a pure partisan hack,” McCain wrote.
“Have some respect for the two women standing in front of you who are exposing lies, deep corruption and keeping the country safe. The White House should pull her credentials.”
The post quickly gained traction on social media, garnering widespread support from conservative users and commentators.
Gabbard’s release of the intelligence documents has reignited public discussion about the origins of the Trump-Russia collusion narrative.
The documents, which Gabbard says were previously withheld, reportedly suggest that members of the Obama administration actively worked to undermine Trump’s incoming presidency through misinformation.
During the briefing, Gabbard declined to name specific officials beyond Obama but insisted the documents speak for themselves and are available for public review.
“This isn’t about partisan politics,” she said.
“It’s about transparency and ensuring the American people know the truth about what happened in the final months of the Obama administration.”
Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman from Hawaii and a 2020 presidential candidate, was appointed Director of National Intelligence earlier this year by President Trump.
Her appointment was met with both praise and skepticism, given her prior affiliation with the Democratic Party and outspoken criticism of U.S. foreign policy.
McCain played a key role in building bipartisan support for Gabbard’s nomination in the Senate, according to reports from Page Six.
The outlet stated that McCain, despite her prior opposition to Trump, made calls to moderate senators to rally support for Gabbard’s confirmation.
“The White House thanked Meghan for her help in bringing moderates around to Gabbard,” a source told the publication in a February report.
McCain’s political stance has evolved in recent years.
Once a vocal critic of Trump, she has since aligned herself with key members of the Trump administration on issues of national security and government transparency.
Her defense of Gabbard marks a significant shift from her earlier positioning within the Republican Party.
