Former Vice President Kamala Harris’ ex-lover, Willie Brown, is expressing doubt about her possible aspirations to become the next governor of California.
In a recent interview, Brown, who served as mayor of San Francisco from 1996-2004, said Harris would not be a good “fit” as governor.
“I do think people running for public office really ought to fit eventually where they are trying to land at. And I really do, hope, frankly, that [Harris] comes to that reality,” Brown said, referring to Harris’ political future.
Brown argued that Harris’s political expertise does not align much with that of being an executive but rather a top legal job, such as serving on the Supreme Court or as attorney general.
The ex-San Francisco mayor said it would be “difficult” for Harris to be elected governor.
“She may not want to run for governor of the state of California,” he said. “That may not be where she should be going. I think it’s going to be difficult for her to win that job.”
Brown pointed out that there are multiple “quality” officials eyeing the governor’s mansion in California.
“There’s just so many really talented people thinking about that job,” he said.
Brown said that former Los Angeles mayoral candidate and businessman Rick Caruso has “great executive potential.”
As the New York Post pointed out, Harris was involved in a romantic relationship with Brown in the 1990s shortly before he became mayor of San Francisco.
Harris was a young prosecutor at the time and Brown was a married man.
In December 1995, ABC Primetime aired a clip of Harris and Brown together during his mayoral election night party.
“Are you his daughter?” Harris was asked.
“No, I’m not,” she replied.
The relationship is said to have begun in 1994 and ended in 1995.
During the interview, Brown said that Harris has not spoken to him since he advised her not to be Joe Biden’s running mate in 2020.
“I’ve gotten in real trouble giving Kamala Harris advice,” Brown said.
“She is bold enough, tough enough, and well-informed enough that if she would utilize that talent, she would not need a person like me giving her advice, period. She would be doing what needs to be done,” he added.
Brown’s remarks come after Harris lost the 2024 presidential election to President Donald Trump in a landslide.
Following her loss, there has been plenty of speculation that she is considering launching a gubernatorial bid in the Golden State.
A July poll by the University of California Irvine (UCI) showed Harris with 41% support in a hypothetical California gubernatorial primary, the Los Angeles Times reported.
“The path to governor seems well-paved for Vice President Harris if she decides to run,” UCI’s School of Social Ecology dean, Jon Gould, said in a statement. “Although she lacks majority support at the moment, people know her better than the other candidates and generally view her favorably.”
