Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has been a consistent critic of President Donald Trump and his tariffs on foreign countries.
In a recent video posted on Whitmer’s official governor’s X account, Whitmer has her head turned away from the camera while she says, “Republicans in Washington want to put blanket tariffs on our closest allies, skyrocketing costs for everyday small businesses just to get by. Tariffs will make your life more expensive. That is not OK.”
Through July 20, Trump’s tariffs have brought in $104.7 billion. By comparison, tariffs brought in $48.3 billion at the same time in 2024, according to the Bipartisan Policy Center. That means revenues from tariffs have more than doubled since last year.
That extra revenue for the government does not come at the expense of U.S. taxpayers.
