Kaiser Permanente intends to pause gender-affirming surgeries for patients under the age of 19, according to a statement from the health care provider.
The pause will go in effect on Aug. 29. According to Kaiser, the decision was made in light of efforts from the federal government to target hospitals, clinics and doctors that provide gender-affirming care.
“This has included executive orders instructing federal agencies to take actions to curtail access and restrict funding for gender-affirming care, hospital inquiries by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and regulatory changes to coverage and broader federal agency review, including by the Federal Trade Commission,” Kaiser’s statement said. “Most recently, the U.S. Department of Justice issued subpoenas to doctors and clinics providing gender-affirming care to transgender youth, as part of ongoing federal investigations.”
Kaiser said it will continue to provide all of its other gender-affirming care treatments besides surgery to transgender adolescents.
