A New Mexico man is behind bars after allegedly killing his girlfriend’s ex-husband in a heated confrontation that unfolded while the victim was simply trying to help with her car.
The shocking incident happened in Ranchos De Taos on Wednesday, July 16. According to New Mexico State Police, 45-year-old Antonio Gomez was fatally shot, and his ex-wife—who was also injured—survived a gunshot wound to her arm. The couple’s children reportedly witnessed the horrifying scene.
Authorities arrested 35-year-old Eduardo Castaneda hours later. Police say he fled the scene immediately after opening fire.
The investigation revealed that Gomez had been picked up by his ex-wife earlier that day to help her with car trouble. She is now in a relationship with Castaneda, who was at work when she contacted Gomez for assistance. After Castaneda couldn’t reach her by phone, he allegedly drove to the residence—and that’s when things escalated.
Police say Castaneda got into an argument with Gomez and then pulled out a gun, shooting both Gomez and the woman. She was hit in the arm; Gomez did not survive.
According to an arrest warrant obtained by the Albuquerque Journal, Castaneda later claimed he acted in self-defense and that Gomez attacked him first. Authorities have charged him with first-degree murder, aggravated battery, and three counts of child abuse due to the children being present during the shooting.
Gomez is being remembered as a devoted father. His brother, Frank Gomez, created a GoFundMe to help cover funeral expenses and wrote, “Anyone that knew him knew he lived for his kids. We are heartbroken, and he will be truly missed. This tragedy is one we will never quite understand.”
At this time, Castaneda’s plea and attorney information have not been released.
