The race for the next mayor of Minneapolis is off to a controversial start. With the DFL endorsement of a democratic socialist facing scrutiny, the chair of the Minneapolis GOP Diane Napper spoke with Liz Collin on her podcast about what’s at stake this November.
Omar Fateh is currently a Minnesota state senator. He’s now the DFL-endorsed candidate for the Mayor of Minneapolis. However, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has asked the DFL to invalidate the endorsement.
“It sounds like there were quite a few shenanigans going on. I’ve heard different stories, but I think the biggest problem is that perhaps they didn’t follow their own rules … The rules of the convention matter. And it sounds like the rules were not followed,” Napper said as she reflected on reports from the endorsing convention.
As a member of the Democratic Socials of America (DSA), Fateh has made several controversial statements—including a viral video from the Senate floor, where he said his Republican colleagues look like terrorists.

“It’s shameful. The DFL, in particular the socialists, seem to want to have a double standard for everything. Can you imagine if a white senator had said the exact same thing about Omar and his supporters? I know that there was actually an ethics complaint filed against him immediately after that speech on the Senate floor. I thought we were supposed to tone down the rhetoric. I thought we were supposed to try to get along and be ‘One Minnesota’ but that’s not where he’s coming from,” Napper said.
“I don’t know that their supporters actually understand the full weight of what it is that the Democratic Socialists of America stand for. It’s about dismantling the police force so that we don’t feel safer on our streets. It’s about taking away economic freedom for small businesses,” she added.
Napper also pointed out a few warning signs.
“We’ve got a lot of democratic socialists on the Minneapolis City Council right now and their policies are just killing small businesses. They’re driving out the larger businesses that just can’t compete or they’re spending too much money for protection and security. If we’re driving the wealth creators out of Minneapolis already. So that would just make it even worse,” she added.
Regarding economics, Napper also explained how “The socialists believe that there’s an endless supply of money that someone else is going to take care of. But we know through history that that’s not true. And engaging voters, talking to them, letting them have conversations to make sure that they really understand what it is that the Democrat Socialists of America stand for, because it is going to take away their economic freedom. It’s going to make them less safe. And it’s just going to be the downfall of Minneapolis.”
