As more than 3,500 young adults prepare to travel from the US to Rome for the Jubilee of Young People July 30, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) is offering online resources for people to participate in the events from afar.
The USCCB organized the celebration, which will take place at the Papal Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, one of four basilicas in Rome and the site of a Jubilee Holy Door.
The young adults will pray, worship, and receive catechesis during the event, which will occur from 1-4 p.m. EDT.
Two bishops from the US will be at the event, including Bishop Robert Barron of Winona-Rochester, who will give a talk “on what it means to be a missionary witness in the contemporary world,” according to a July 21 USCCB press release. Bishop Barron is chairman of the USCCB’s Committee for Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth. His reflection closely follows the theme of the event, which is “missionary witnesses of hope.”
The young adult pilgrims will also attend a Holy Hour led by Bishop Edward Burns of Dallas.
According to the release, the event will feature 12 saints and blesseds who are either connected to the history of the US or are significant to youth. Their images and an associated relic will be part of a procession at the beginning of the event.
The USCCB will livestream the event on its YouTube channel. The USCCB is encouraging dioceses to spread awareness about the livestream as well.
The USCCB is also offering an online resource packet with suggestions for the Jubilee for local parishes, such as hosting Jubilee prayer services for young adults, networking and evangelization events after weekend Masses before or after the Jubilee, small group-focused activities, or local pilgrimages.
