If you needed an example of how far late-night comedy has fallen, the best their over-priced writers could come up with over Stephen Colbert getting cancelled is to say “go f*ck yourself” to Donald Trump. You expected it from Stephen Colbert. I was embarrassed for Jon Stewart.
To recap: Paramount discovered Colbert wasn’t worth losing $40 million a year anymore and is canceling his show… in May, as in, ten months from now. That’s a key point to remember when the media claims without evidence that Colbert was only cancelled to bend the knee to Donald Trump.
Colbert fans were so outraged, they protested. I know what you’re thinking, too. A left-wing protest in New York City? What are the odds?
Inside, Colbert addressed his core AWFL audience that has rode with him all these years as he went from doing comedy on The Dana Carvey Show to regurgitating talking points for the DNC. You know how after Donald Trump won bigly in 2024 and Democrats went on cursing binges because their pollsters said they need to sound more like normal folk?
But cursing wasn’t enough for Jon Stewart. He also needed to perform a song and dance number. I say this as someone who reveres Jon Stewart and has him on his Mount Rushmore of funny (with David Letterman, Mel Brooks, and Rodney Dangerfield), but it didn’t have to be like this. He retired. He was out of the game. He could have stuck to doing podcasts like every other bored entertainer.
Instead, he came back so that he could be reduced to this…
My favorite part in all this? As Democrats and the media (but I repeat myself) mock the struggles of normal people while rallying around a guy who makes tens of millions of dollars that causes his employer to lose tens of millions more of dollars, they still won’t understand why they lose elections.
