A private school in Alabama has been rocked by scandal after one of its teachers was arrested for allegedly engaging in a sexual relationship with a minor student—an accusation that may just be the beginning.
Sarah Huggins Logan, 35, a former educator at North River Christian Academy in Tuscaloosa, was arrested on Friday, July 18, and charged with one count of a school employee engaging in a sex act with a student. Authorities say more charges could be on the way as the investigation deepens.
The case came to light after the parents of a female student contacted the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office on July 16, reporting a suspected inappropriate relationship between their child and Logan. The case was quickly handed over to the Violent Crimes Unit’s Sexual Assault Section, which conducted interviews and reviewed evidence before issuing a warrant for Logan’s arrest.
The school, which serves grades K5 through 12, confirmed the arrest in a statement posted to Facebook, referring to Logan only as a “former employee.” They said she had already been released from her position earlier in the week for reasons they claim were “unrelated to the arrest.”
“Our first concern is for the health and welfare of our students, staff, and families,” the school said in its statement. “Please respect the privacy of all these parties. Contributing to rumors and suspicions profits no one and contributes only to the hardships experienced by those impacted.”
Officials say Logan is no longer affiliated with the school, but there are troubling signs that this may not have been an isolated incident. Investigators are exploring the possibility that other students may have been targeted and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
In a follow-up statement, the school described the situation as “heart rending for all involved,” emphasizing the emotional toll it’s taken on the community. “We have prayed for them and encouraged our entire school family to hold them up in their personal prayers,” they wrote. “This situation is easy for no one; there are only degrees of difficulty.”
