Democratic Texas state Representative James Talarico (D) appeared on Joe Rogan’s podcast Friday, where he received unexpected praise from the host.
Rogan, a well-known comedian and commentator, told the lawmaker that he should consider a presidential run.
The endorsement came at the conclusion of a lengthy discussion on “The Joe Rogan Experience.”
Talarico, 36, represents Texas’s 50th District and is a former teacher. During the interview, he spoke at length about his Christian beliefs, political background, and several policy issues at both the state and federal levels.
His viewpoints appeared to resonate strongly with Rogan.
“You need to run for president,” Rogan said. “We need someone who is actually a good person.”
Talarico responded with humility, suggesting he wasn’t comfortable with that kind of attention. He asked Rogan to let him explain why he disagreed, per the New York Post.
“Can I actually push back on that?” Talarico asked. He went on to discuss the dangers of turning politics into a belief system akin to religion. He noted that excessive faith in political figures can be problematic.
Talarico pointed to examples across the political spectrum. “I’ve seen it with Bernie,” he said, referring to Senator Bernie Sanders. “I like Bernie a whole lot, but some people treat him as if he’s a messianic figure.” He added that supporters of Donald Trump on the right have demonstrated similar behavior.
“This is a problem,” Talarico emphasized. He warned that investing total faith in politicians, rather than in ideas or values, leads to unhealthy political culture. His comments were met with agreement by Rogan, who has frequently criticized political tribalism on his show.
Talarico previously drew national attention in 2021 for his remarks on biological sex. During a Texas legislative hearing, he opposed a bill banning “transgender” athletes from girls’ K-12 sports. He argued that biological sex is not binary but exists on a spectrum.
“[M]odern science obviously recognizes that there are many more than two biological sexes,” Talarico said during a Public Education Committee hearing. He added, “In fact, there are six, which honestly … surprised me, too.”
Talarico outlined the six most commonly recognized biological sex variations based on chromosome combinations. These included XX (female), XY (male), as well as single X, XXY, XYY, and XXXY. He said that while most people fall into the first two categories, others exist naturally.
“The point is that biologically speaking, scientifically speaking, sex is a spectrum, and oftentimes can be very ambiguous,” he concluded. His statements sparked both support and backlash at the time.
A photo circulated online of Talarico flying with Rep. Senfronia Thompson on a private jet from Austin to Washington, DC. It was taken during a special session and posted on social media.
Rogan has been a vocal critic of radical gender ideology and the inclusion of “transgender” athletes in women’s sports. He previously denounced excessive terminology related to gender.
“When you say there’s 78 words for gender, I can safely say you’re f**king crazy,” Rogan said in an earlier episode. His views on the matter are well known to his audience.
