Zohran Mamdani, the leading candidate for New York City mayor, has publicly supported abolishing private property in the city, according to a recently resurfaced video.
The pro-communist politician emphasized the importance of guaranteeing housing for all residents of New York.
In the video, Mamdani said, “My platform is that every single person should have housing,” questioning why the current system leaves hundreds of thousands unhoused.
He suggested that abolishing private property or instituting a statewide housing guarantee would be preferable to the existing housing crisis.
Mamdani dismissed critics who tried to trap him with “gotcha” questions, insisting his priority is ensuring that everyone has a home. “I care more about whether somebody has a home,” he said.
The clip reignited controversy, drawing sharp criticism from conservatives, including Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY).
Malliotakis called Mamdani’s views “communist ideas right out of the playbook of Karl Marx,” citing his calls to abolish private property and seize the means of production.
Malliotakis criticized media and Democratic Party figures for not confronting Mamdani’s radical positions, per Trending Politics.
She warned that many New Yorkers, especially those who fled socialist or communist regimes, would reject Mamdani if they fully understood his policies.
Mamdani’s political record includes numerous statements endorsing explicitly communist and anti-American ideas. For example, in December 2020, he reposted a tweet celebrating the election of Arya Rajendran, a communist mayoral candidate in India. He endorsed Rajendran as the type of leader New York City needs.
Additionally, Mamdani has proposed government-run grocery stores in each of New York’s five boroughs to address food insecurity. Experts say this could threaten the city’s small businesses and bodegas, which operate on thin profit margins.
Mamdani, who gained US citizenship eight years ago, has a multinational background. Born in Uganda and raised between India and the US, he has been described by his mother as “not an American at all.” His mother, Mira Nair, told the Hindustan Times that Mamdani identifies strongly with his Ugandan and Indian roots.
President Donald Trump has criticized Mamdani sharply, especially over his promises to defy federal immigration enforcement. When asked about Mamdani’s stance, Trump responded, “Well, then we’ll have to arrest him.”
Trump said the nation does not need communists in leadership but added that he would monitor Mamdani’s actions closely. “If we have one, I’m going to be watching over him very carefully on behalf of the nation,” Trump said.
The mayoral race in New York City has gained national attention due to Mamdani’s radical platform and potential to become the city’s next leader. His proposals challenge long-standing economic and political norms.
Critics fear that Mamdani’s agenda could lead to major disruptions in the city’s housing market and economy. Supporters, meanwhile, argue his policies address systemic inequalities and the city’s housing crisis.
Mamdani’s campaign highlights the growing influence of communist and socialist ideas in urban politics. His vision includes radical shifts in property rights and government control over services.
The debate over Mamdani’s proposals underscores broader national divisions about housing, government intervention, and economic policy. As New Yorkers prepare to vote, the spotlight remains on Mamdani’s unconventional platform.
Observers note that Mamdani’s background and political views make him a polarizing figure both within New York and across the U.S. His campaign continues to spark intense discussion about the future direction of the city.
