President Donald Trump will not be appointing a special prosecutor to look into the Jeffrey Epstein case.
This decision, according to the Daily Mail, comes despite calls from some of Trump’s biggest supporters to do so.
The president, though, has made one concession, namely, he has ordered U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi to release “all pertinent grand jury testimony” from the Epstein matter.
Whether or not this will be enough to appease those who have claimed that the Trump administration is perpetuating the cover-up of the Epstein situation remains unclear.
No special prosecutor forthcoming
It is White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt who has confirmed that there will be no special prosecutor appointed.
Leavitt put out a statement, saying:
The Attorney General and the FBI, led by Pam Bondi, Dan Bongino, Kash Patel. These are great patriots. Some of the most trusted voices in the Republican party movement. It’s part of the reason the president appointed them to these high law enforcement positions.
Bondi’s credibility has taken a hit following the release of a memo claiming that there is no Epstein client list to be released by the administration. FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino’s reputation took less of a hit after reports emerged, indicating his dissatisfaction with the way Bondi handled the situation. FBI Director Kash Patel’s credibility is thought to fall somewhere in between that of Bondi and Bongino.
Leavitt continued:
The president has said if the attorney general and Department of Justice and the FBI have more credible evidence in regards to Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes, they should put that forward.
Referring to the Democrats, Leavitt added, “They had control of the White House for four years, and they didn’t do a dang thing when it came to transparency in regards to Jeffrey Epstein and his heinous crimes.”
Trump laments Epstein “hoax”
The president, for his part, is still trying to get his base to move on from the Epstein situation.
In one social media post, he described the Epstein situation as a “hoax” created by the Democrats. He said, “But they ought to look into the Jeffrey Epstein hoax too, because that’s another hoax that’s frankly, put out by the Democrats pushing, pushing the Republicans, and put out by the Democrats.”
Trump, though, has now ordered Bondi to release grand jury testimony.
In a Thursday statement, he wrote:
Based on the ridiculous amount of publicity given to Jeffrey Epstein, I have asked Attorney General Pam Bondi to produce any and all pertinent Grand Jury testimony, subject to Court approval. This SCAM, perpetuated by the Democrats, should end, right now!
But, in another, he added, “If there was a “smoking gun” on Epstein, why didn’t the Dems, who controlled the “files” for four years, and had Garland and Comey in charge, use it? BECAUSE THEY HAD NOTHING!!!”
