President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday creating a new classification of federal employees.
While crying to cut down the current federal workforce in the interest of saving taxpayer dollars and reducing wasteful spending, Trump is also looking to bring on noncareer federal employees who will help with the implementation of his agenda. To this end, he created “Schedule G” workers who will be involved with “policy-making or policy-advocating work,” according to a statement from the White House.
“President Trump believes creating non-career Schedule G positions will enhance government efficiency and accountability and improve services provided to taxpayers by increasing the horsepower for agency implementation of Administration policy,” the statement reads.
Schedule G positions will be non-career positions, meaning incumbents will generally be expected to leave when the President who appointed them leaves office. Schedule G will not apply to career positions or career employees.

The tenure of work in these positions will “generally” be expected to end once Trump leaves office at the conclusion of his term, and will not apply to career employees or positions. The White House believes that the creation of these jobs will enhance operations “by streamlining appointments for key policy roles.” The Department of Veterans Affairs is one bureau that is expected to benefit greatly from Schedule G workers.
It is currently unclear how many employees would be hired under the new classification.
“In April, the administration proposed a rule to reclassify thousands of career federal government employees as ‘at-will’ workers, empowering ‘federal agencies to swiftly remove employees in policy-influencing roles for poor performance, misconduct, corruption, or subversion of Presidential directives, without lengthy procedural hurdles.’” The Hill reported.
