House Republicans have introduced legislation to strip the National Education Association of its congressional charter, marking the most aggressive move yet to punish America’s largest teachers union for abandoning education in favor of woke political activism.
At a Glance
- House Republicans have introduced a bill to revoke the NEA’s 119-year-old federal charter, with a companion bill in the Senate from Sen. Marsha Blackburn.
- The NEA has transformed from a professional education organization into a leftist political machine, with over 95% of its donations going to Democrats.
- Moms for Liberty has endorsed the legislation, arguing Congress should not give its stamp of approval to an organization undermining parental rights.
- The repeal would be largely symbolic but sends a clear message that taxpayers reject the NEA’s extremist agenda.
A Reckoning for a ‘Woke’ Union
Republicans in Congress have had enough of watching the National Education Association (NEA) masquerade as an educational organization while pushing radical leftist propaganda in our schools. The National Education Association Charter Repeal Act, championed by Rep. Bob Good (R-VA), represents a long-overdue reckoning with an organization that has abandoned its mission.
The NEA received its federal charter in 1906 to “advance the interests of the profession of teaching,” but today it operates as little more than a political attack dog for the Democratic Party. As Rep. Good has argued, there is “zero justification for the United States Congress to continue giving them our stamp of approval.”
From Education to Political Machine
The NEA’s transformation into a woke political machine is a case study in how our institutions have been captured by the radical left. Once focused on professional development, the NEA is now a government union more interested in collective bargaining and pushing progressive ideology than in student outcomes.

They have become foot soldiers in the war against parental rights, defending critical race theory and radical gender ideology in the classroom. The organization’s own political spending tells the story: according to OpenSecrets, the overwhelming majority of its political contributions consistently flow to Democratic candidates and causes.
Parents Fight Back Against Union Extremism
Parental rights groups like Moms for Liberty have thrown their full support behind the charter repeal. They argue that the NEA’s assertion that educators know best what students need is a direct attack on the fundamental right of parents to direct their children’s upbringing.
While the bill will not dissolve the NEA, it sends a clear message that Congress will no longer endorse the extremist politics of this corrupt organization. It would strip the NEA of certain tax exemptions and, more importantly, remove Congress’s official seal of approval from their radical activities. With the parental rights movement gaining unprecedented momentum, the time for this long-overdue accountability has finally come.
