Zohran Mamdani and School Children’s Lives: Islamic Socialism in Action

An act to amend the education law, in relation to establishing Muslim Religious Law holidays Eidal-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as school holidays — Co-sponsored by Zohran Mamdani in 2025.

The law establishes Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as school holidays, with dates established by religious law and tradition; allows for school districts and municipalities with a population of less than fifty thousand to opt into the recognition of such holidays.

Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting, while Eid al-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, coincides with the end of the Hajj pilgrimage.

AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to establishing Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha as school holidays:

8. No school shall be in session on a Saturday, the first day of the second lunar month after the winter solstice in the preceding calendar year known as Asian Lunar New Year, or a legal holiday, except general election day, Washington’s birthday and Lincoln’s birthday, and except that driver education classes may be conducted on a Saturday. FOR MUNICIPALITIES AND SCHOOL DISTRICTS WITH A POPULATION OF FIFTY THOUSAND OR MORE, THE FOREGOING SHALL ALSO APPLY TO THE HOLIDAYS OF EID AL-FITR AND EID AL-ADHA, AS AFFIXED BY MUSLIM RELIGIOUS LAW AND TRADITION. FOR MUNICIPALITIES AND SCHOOL DISTRICTS WITH A POPULATION OF LESS THAN FIFTY THOUSAND, THE FOREGOING MAY APPLY IF SUCH MUNICIPALITY OR SCHOOL DISTRICT OPTS INTO THE RECOGNITION OF THE HOLIDAYS OF EID AL-FITR AND EID AL-ADHA.

Ramadan’s historical call to jihad violence: Jihad is “holy war” against Jews and Americans.

“Ramadan is the month of jihad in all its manifestations…”Ramadan, however, must be seen primarily as the month of struggle and jihad, both internally as well as externally. As Muslims continue to struggle against oppression in many parts of the world — Palestine, Iraq, Chechnya, Afghanistan and Kashmir — it becomes incumbent upon all Muslims to share in their pain and suffering. Ramadan should spur us to redouble our efforts to help in their struggles for liberation and dignified existence.”
