As part of the celebrations of the 75th anniversary of a united Budapest, the city is bringing the silver screen to parks, beaches, and community spaces in an initiative that blends local culture with cinema. The ‘Road Movie’ programme kicks off on 17 July with a screening of Csinibaba at the Pesterzsébet Bath, and will continue across seven districts with seven iconic Hungarian films—all free of charge.
Organized by Budapest Film Ltd and Budapest Gyógyfürdői és Hévizei Ltd, the open-air screenings will start around 8 to 9pm, depending on sunset. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and mosquito repellent for comfort. The initiative is also supported by the Budapest Cultural Centre, aiming to spotlight lesser-known public spaces and integrate them into the city’s cultural life as part of the anniversary celebrations.
In addition to public parks and community centres, two of Budapest’s thermal bath locations will also host screenings, including Pesterzsébet and Pünkösdfürdő locations. Entry is free, though advance registration is required in some cases. For instance, viewing Csinibaba at Pesterzsébet Bath on 17 July requires booking through the venue’s website. Later in the summer, We Never Die will screen at Pünkösdfürdő Strand on 21 August.
Other venues in the series include Kondor Béla Community House, the RAM Theatre, Bikás Park, Pestújhely Community House, and DunaFok Leisure Centre. Updates are shared via the Budapest Garden Cinema’s Facebook page.
This summer also sees the return of CineSpa, now in its third year. The joint programme by Budapest Film and the city’s thermal bath network transforms the outdoor experience pool of Széchenyi Bath into a cinema under the sky. Upcoming screenings include The Greatest Showman on 25 July—rescheduled due to weather—and Snatch on 29 July. Residents with a Budapest ID can enter the bath after 9pm at half price to enjoy the movies.
From floating film nights to cinematic picnics, the city’s anniversary celebrations merge cultural heritage with fresh urban experiences, inviting locals to rediscover Budapest in a new light.
